We are in a terrible situation and going into a worse situation,” said Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. “I don’t know if the bird flu will become a pandemic, but if it does, we are screwed.”

ActivityPub or Lemmy ? Mastodon and use hastags and theres plenty out there, I've never even browsed the local feed of my Mastodon Instance. Because of ActivityPub there can be some interaction with Lemmy that way as well

I just browse All on Lemmy and that leads to occasional small local communities on other instances.of interest.

  1. Linux does not work with the particular hardware or software you want or need to use.

That's a good reason

  1. It's a PITA to just do basic stuff.

What's outright bullshit so kinda obviated your argument. Sure, if downloading onto a thumb drive and rebooting a few times is hard becase you expect your OS to be preloaded then maybe but that wasn't even your point.

Mint has a web browser, Office Software, Graphic Software, Music Players etc all loaded. Open up the Application Installer, a GUI and type in the obvious bar at the top for what you want, download and good to go.

Degrowth can't "work" , it can prolong the shit show though and theres something to be said for that, ask any Cancer patient.

Zero chance of occuring though, so while discussion on the nuance are intellectually interesting they hold no promise aside from hope for some of a better world..

Most people dont even grok it means a better life for more, they wrongly assume they're not in the more I guess ?

Perhaps after cicikisations collpase ? but I'd expect that we'll leave a childishly irradiated world.

Not quite sure how this fits into collapse though? , "back then" a better lifestyle (for those not persecuted) that completly ignored ecological overshoot is not aspirationl.

Why is the land drying out so fast? It's partly because there is more heat trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gases emitted from burning fossil fuels. This excess heat has exacerbated evaporation and is drawing more moisture out of soil.

Climate change has also made the weather more volatile. When drought does cede to rain, more of it arrives in bruising downpours that slough the topsoil

Rising temperatures, increasing precipitation, thawing permafrost and melting ice are pushing the Arctic outside its historical norms

Faster then expected ?

Three leading climate scientists have combined insights from 10 global climate models and, with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), conclude that regional warming thresholds are likely to be reached faster than previously estimated.

Mmmm faster then expected huh ?

If fossil fuels keep burning at present rates, we are headed for apocalyptic civilisational collapse. Perhaps even more strangely, there is no longer much serious disagreement about this claim.

$200bn wave of new gas projects could lead to a “climate bomb” equivalent to releasing the annual emissions of all the world’s operating coal power plants, according to a report.

This melting will lead to a rise in sea levels of up to one metre, threatening millions of people in coastal areas.

That's just from Greenlands ice sheets (by 2100)

This is on point as well

Article is mostly how to profit of human stupidity but I thought this quote was salient and on topic. Not new for people who have paid attention though but a reminder.

"[The world] will have to produce approximately a billion tonnes of copper metal in the next 25 years to meet net zero targets," he said.

That is more copper than has ever been produced.

Clean energy might help deal with emissions, but it does nothing to reverse deforestation, overfishing, soil depletion and mass extinction. A growth-obsessed economy powered by clean energy will still tip us into ecological disaster.” - Jason Hickel
