How do pagers work? (lemmy.world)
submitted 4 hours ago by yesman@lemmy.world to c/asklemmy@lemmy.world

In recent events, I learned that some pagers only have receivers. How are discrete messages sent to these devices? How is it authenticated? How do they know the device got the message?

You could call this a sequel to my last question, but I was genuinely curious. Question inspired by someone I know joking about being arrested for selling donuts to someone who died as a result because they didn't need junk food.

I'm familiar with RSS, but I'm becoming increasingly passionate about JSON Feeds. This leads me to ask:

Besides NPR News, are there any other interesting JSON Feeds to follow?

Side Note: If this isn't the right community for this question, please guide me to a more appropriate one.

Please try your best to narrow it down to THREE! Can you recall which shows on TV feel synonymous with your youth? Can be your childhood phase, your adolescent phase, etc. - whatever you define as your youth!

For me: Jackie Chan Adventures, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Pokemon

I’ve got wallet and lighter front right, phone and cigs front left, and keys on a carabiner tucked into back right. Back left is basically always empty.

I am looking for a self-improvement alternative to doom scrolling social media in my downtime. In the past, I have done mostly career oriented courses (tech/computer science), but I'm tired of those, want to branch out. Has anyone taken a MOOC class, not necessarily for any specific objectibe, that was especially good?

Hello,

Bought a spare super cheap used 3TB drive a year ago, and just figured out it's not a SATA but a SAS drive.

How fucked am I? What can I do more than using it as a paperweight?

Cheers!

Tell us it all. We want details, especially regarding the best parts. Paint the story so we can live it. Let's overwhelm brains with happiness and gratitude 🫠

Was thinking of this after a conversation I had on a thread about dreams. Someone joked “I was dreaming of the events of The Matrix, then I was woken up by someone worried my dream was infringing the Wachowski’s copyrights”, and it turned into a whole train of thought in my mind, like violating IP law because you stole fire from Zeus which was his intellectual property.

If someone says you suffer from cognitive dissonance, what does that even mean?

Some people prefer to smoke after sex but I prefer a soda after an ice cream sandwich

Just random stuff and non-sequitars me brain stumbles onto...

On quite a few news websites there's a new hot topic how the Australian "Ghost" app got hacked by Interpol and has led to prevention of murders and resulted in a few arrests.

Is there any information out there on what security methods Ghost used and how it was exploited?

Do you Google search and click on whatever news sources come up or do you look into the news sources leanings, news reporting quality, and credibility? Maybe just if you can vibe with it or not in general?

Simplified

Do you save a list of specific news sites? Or do you just click on anything just to read that specific story on a search engine?

Me personally: I have a set list of sites I check. I know that they are credible and trust worthy to the public, being non profits and them having high standards to news reporting. (some of them include Npr, and Ap news) Most of their news stories are intended to benefit the public. Of course they aren't always perfect, but a solid choice, especially if you're starting out on picking a specific news source.

How about you all?

To those from the Western hemisphere, it’s always fascinating to hear that some homes and businesses from the times of the Greek philosophers still have inhabitants, and then you remember that the Western hemisphere is itself not without its own examples, for example some Mexican villages still have temples from the times of the Mayans.

This seems to be something people don’t always give second thought to. When people talk about the homeless, the first things thought about are images of people on busy city streets in rusty clothes waiting around near allies. In there, the answer is quite static, because it can be I guess. But if that’s the case, change the setting and that changes too. In the places where I’ve lived, people often needed that mapped out. Where are they known in your rural locales?
