Glassdoor officially became dead to me last year, when they made everything "opt out" in terms of privacy. It made the rounds and I know they lost a good chunk of reviewers. With this it makes sense, engagement is probably low and they're desperate to bring numbers up.

Screw them, they became company focused instead of user focused, there's zero reason to give them reviews anymore. Companies can pay to remove reviews, they are not as private, there's no reason.

I know I failed out of my first year of college simply because all through school I was told I was so smart. So I got to college and was bitch slapped by what actual work looked like. Luckily I turned it around. However I had someone who was sort of my counter part who was in the same advanced classes as me, same thing happened and he works at a gas station in the middle of nowhere now. You want to think your kids are special and want to encourage them, but no.

We need to teach that special is earned, not a given.

As both an instance admin and a mod of a few communities, I can already tell you those are just expectations of any community already. That's not new, that's already the baseline. You have to find something even better than that.

Good. Americana think they're so much different from everyone else and we're literally not. I hold a form belief that everyone just wants to go to work, get off work, they'd rather get a pizza for dinner but they're going to try to eat something better, are looking forward to their next day off, and when it comes they're going to go to their target equivalent for a boring errands run. I think about 90% of the people are in this category, just average working people, and that makes me feel a little more connected with them.

Oh, MyCoolCommunity would require me to pay because it's on instanceA? Fuck that, hey everyone, come join MyCoolCommunity on instanceB!

This isn't some guy who has loved their products for years and wanted to express how much joy he's had from them by writing a comic about them - they can't just go sue them immediately. This is a corporation, they have to make sure that it's the right move. Come on, that's Corpo 101

That America was the greatest country in the world. And truly, not trying to be political, but honestly the propaganda in Midwest America was real. I didn't know anything about other countries - except for we were better. We figured it out, we built the best system ever and everyone else wanted to be like us.

Now those are the people I see overseas who are about to get punched in a pub.

Maybe they shouldn't use marketers. From what I see, marketers are the reason for unreal hype. Look at cyberpunk, marketers told poeple that it was going to be basically a real life simulator and then people were upset that it was only a really fun RPG. (Aside from the launch issues this was also a big thing at launch).

All modern games hype is directly because of marketers.

Here's a novel thing. Just show us what the game is like. No stupid marketing lingo, no flashy graphics, just what the game is like. Give us the opening mission. There, pay me a marketing fee. No stupid high expectations, no lying about features that don't actually exist, just telling the consumer honestly what they're buying.

Exactly, every time it's close the roar against it gets quieter. They're banking on that

Marketers explicitly and silently rebranded AI to AGI, a term that I think was literally just made up. I think they should have been reversed, llma deserve a new term, but not AI.

But you see that wasn't the problem. The problem was that they knew some new term would fall flat. They wanted investors frothing at the mouth - so they just changed the definition of AI to make that happen.

Yes that was the joke.

They did, and they gave it to Ubisoft.

LTO-8 Drives (poptalk.scrubbles.tech)

Hey folks, I'm lucky enough to be in one of the few places on the internet that uses LTO.

I'm running LTO-8 tape. My current drive is kind of a dud, I'm interested in a new (to me) drive. Either internal in just an old desktop, or an external drive. I'm not afraid to shell out for it, but if I am I'm nervous to drop 2000 on just a random ebay seller. Anyone have any reputable sources? In the Seattle area if anyone knows a local one too.

Private and public investment in clean energy rose to a total of $147B in the first half of this year — a record-setting figure.

Exactly two years ago today, President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act, establishing a wide array of clean energy programs meant to supercharge spending on climate solutions.

Investment in clean energy projects — from solar manufacturing facilities to home batteries to hydrogen hubs — has taken off ever since, rising to record heights in the first half of this year.

Across the first six months of 2024, U.S. cleantech investment hit $147 billion, per new data from the Clean Investment Monitor, a joint project from Rhodium Group and the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research. That’s a more than 30 percent jump from the first half of 2023. The report measures actual investment — not announcements or plans — from both public and private sources.

Length restriction on GPUs (poptalk.scrubbles.tech)

Hey folks! Not sure where to put this, but since I'm doing this to install Bazzite soon, why not.

I have a HTPC that currently has an NVidia card in it. Since Gamescope doesn't play nice with nvidia, I'm going to upgrade the GPU. I have a 6900XT in my primary rig, love the thing. here's the thing though, I was going to put it into my original HTPC, but it was too long by about 0.5 inches.

Does anyone have either A) a recommendation on a GPU that can drive a 4K tv that is shorter than 12" or B) Know of any good sites that have a filter?

It's a pretty intense machine, since the whole family uses it. I'm planning on about a grand for the new GPU, if it works like my 6900XT. Less is of course better, but I don't want this one struggling personally.

Thanks for any rec's!

Every day, we work to make our platform the best it can be, which includes regularly revisiting our terms and policies (also known as our House Rules) to make sure they meet the needs of our growing community and allow us to continue to support you. Today, we’re sharing a few updates that go into effect on September 15, 2024.

We’ve made some changes to our dispute resolution clause (section 11) for users in North and South America, with updates to our arbitration procedures for smaller matters and for coordinated or “mass” arbitrations (with 25 or more claimants). We have also updated the choice of law that’s applicable to the Terms. As before, the arbitration agreement includes a class action and jury waiver, which means we’ll be resolving most disputes in private, individual arbitration, and not in court. Please read this section carefully. We’ve added which entity acts as the merchant of record, depending on a buyer’s currency and location of your payment instrument.

So, if you're upset at all you can't sue, you can't go to the courts, you have to sit in a an arbitration with someone we choose who (trust us) won't be biased.

To add in, an annoyance for sure:

Effective July 29, our Adult Nudity and Sexual Content Policy introduces more rigorous guidelines regarding our prohibitions of nude or sexual content, as well as how to appropriately list certain mature content.

Gaming on Linux is great! (poptalk.scrubbles.tech)

I know, lame post, but I wanted to say that Linux gaming has gotten soooo much better, to the point that I honestly think my games are running better than on Windows. I've played so many games, but notable ones are Halo: MCC, MS Flight Sim 2020, Satisfactory, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, and right now I'm starting a full playthrough of Dragon Age.

Dragon Age is notorious even on Windows for being a pain because it's such an old game. You have to install the 4gb patch, and even then it's a bit rocky. Not on Linux though! I did have to install PhysX but I googled it and saw it was 2 buttons to install on Linux! Now it's been rock solid and stable, with no crashes.

Linux gaming may have a high bar to learn, but that bar is constantly getting lower! Exciting times!

I'm an ex incel myself, but I've been seeing a few users here exhibiting the tell tale signs. "I'm not attractive enough", "I don't socialize correctly", "I'll never find a woman" - all extremely unhealthy attitudes.

Personally I burned through many friendships and ruined a lot of chances with women because I was in the incel community. The community warped my view of women so much that I made it even harder to meet women, I became my own worst enemy. I lost friends because all I could think of was how horrible it was that they had girlfriends.

I have a friend who helped me out of it. She was the one who started calling out my bad behavior for what it was, and I started on the long uphill path out of it. I'm now married and stable for well over a decade, but I still think back to those days, and it depresses me seeing other people causing this themselves and not being aware of it.

So, Lemmy, for those who have clawed out of it, what's your story?

Curious to see how many people here are using Wyoming Satellites, and if so, what are you doing to build/house them?

I have a sample one working on an old pi and a computer speaker hooked up, with my primary Blue mic. Obviously this isn't long term, and I'm looking at building a few of these.

So, what do you use? Raspberry pi? Some sort of hat on it? What sort of casing do you use? Any really cool implementations? I'll take all ideas and suggestions!
