I'd be a sucker for saying I can't go full Luigi because I treasure my loved ones more than myself and I am afraid they'd borrow the weight of anything I do before I k-m-s. I'm no person to leave them with that publicity and that responsibility for my actions. With how my hatred flows high, my love and my fear for them is still stronger.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world -1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

If we dont stop the billionaires the climate will.kill us while they retreat to their bunkers. You already have nothing to lose, even if it doesnt look like it yet.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Would you do a breakdown of how I can kill any billionaire in russia having no skills, no info, nothing at all, while they are all hiding in secret bunkers 1k+ miles away?

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Step 1: Walk for days until you find a bunker
Step 2: Shit in the ventilation, if you can't cover every vent with your own shit animal shit will work

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's some amogus shit, and they know I'm the imposter.

[–] Sanctus@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago

I'm gonna be real with you chief. If it comes down to bunker retreat, you won't be worried about where they are. You'll be more worried about your nomadic tribe if you survive the fall.

[–] Kidplayer_666@lemm.ee 24 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Remember that no regime, no matter how strong it may appear is ever able to last forever. No democracy, no autocracy, no kingdom has managed to stand the test of time in absolute. Often all it takes is a few dozen people in the correct points to set the dominoes to fall

[–] zout@fedia.io 17 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Also remember that most (if not all) times a regime falls, the common people suffer. Don't glorify the decay of a nation, but work to change it for the better.

[–] guy@piefed.social 8 points 4 days ago

Sadly, that is sometimes via regime fall.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

I'm not afraid of suffering more if I even can, lmao, but I'm afraid if the fall happens, the power would be captured by the nazis who have overwhelmed even tankies there, and it all would go even worse.

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 5 points 4 days ago

Only downside is I don’t care about time immemorial, I’m more interested in time I’m alive and stuck in it.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

I was protesting, I'm still exposuring my peers to my ideas, but at times it feels like Pu7in and his regime would outlive me. It doesn't need to be eternal, it only needs to outlive those who know it's all wrong and reach the point of our self-destruction as a kind, that is speeded up a lot by this country having the diertiest places in the world like Norilsk.

[–] GhiLA@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Wear it on your chest and fuck them. 100%. never apologize. Make it their problem at every single opportunity and never let anyone forget it.

Light the Roman candles in your mind's eye and flick off the entire town. For the next four fuckin years, I'm the kid with the loud exhaust and I'm making everybody deal with it.

Protests? Yes sir. Shooting right back at fascists the second they say something shitty? You bet. Not giving anyone in my family even a second's bit of reprieve if they start shit during Christmas? With gusto. Scorched. Earth.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

To establish my surviving shitty states credentials: I grew up as a queer kid in the rural Bible Belt during the Clinton and Bush (both of them) years. The current environment may not be exactly the same, but IMO in many ways it’s very similar to the community I grew up in (extremely conservative, racist, and vindictive).

So, here are the things that kept me comparatively sane:

Watch subversive media, whatever that means to you. Being reminded that there is a wider world with people who aren’t like the ones surrounding you (whether it’s your family or wider community) is a powerful hope generator

Connect with similarly minded people in your local community, if you aren’t already. You might need to drive to a college town for this one, depending on your area. Having IRL connections with people who aren’t bastards will keep you sane

Find the joy you can, and make it when you can’t. If you don’t find things to be happy about it will seriously kill you. There’s always stuff to be miserable about, so don’t worry about overdoing it in the joy department

Do something you find meaningful. Volunteering, clean ups, whatever you feel drawn towards. Doesn’t even have to be anything official, like checking in on your loved ones

Get some healthy eating and exercise in when you can, too. If it doesn’t improve your mood it’ll at least let you sleep and poop better

Excellent post.

I would add:

Make a plan to run if you have to. Cash reserve, good backpack, identification and other paperwork, a couple of changes of clothes.

Make a plan to move. Save as much money as you can and set a date. We began planning our move in 2020 and our deadline was last summer.

We successfully completed our move to a better state and are much happier. Like a weight has been lifted off us. It was difficult but very much wotth it.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Thank you for inspiring me. I try to collect money to move, and although it seems like a lost cause rn, your positive experience makes me sure I do the right thing.

[–] Machinist@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

You can do it! We saved for years and spent as little as we could. It's hard, but not impossible.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

I can't tell you how I appreciate your long answer. I already do parts of what you are suggesting. And I'd keep pushing. And would try to find some more island of joy that'd keep me sane in these tiring times. As for now, only my GF keeps me afloat and I abandoned every hobby that needs my attention for I can't manage it, but I'd try and find. Thank you.

[–] NutinButNet@hilariouschaos.com 17 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Vote and move if it’s that bad, in that order.

[–] Mighty@lemmy.world 17 points 5 days ago (1 children)

don't. be angry. show your anger. let it out in productive, constructive ways to support those who can't

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

how so?

ftat if i'm tired already?

what I should do

There are always ways to resist, even in repressive environments. Sometimes it might not be as obvious or as heroic as what we might imagine. It might even be as simple as a nearly invisible act of non-compliance. But these things still matter. In extremely repressive countries, it’s often these small actions, when widespread, that can interfere with their power at key moments, even sometimes leading to the regime’s downfall.

We often imagine that the most effective resistance is some dramatic violent act. But real life isn’t a marvel movie. The most important axis of resistance isn’t how impactful your individual acts are, it’s how widespread and organized this resistance is.

We can’t give you specific advice because the most effective actions are specific to the context, and some forms of resistance that effective in some places may be too dangerous in others. But there are people in your country who have the answers. You just need to find them. In most countries they’re active resistance groups but if that’s not safe than any community orgs that aren’t actively supporting the regime and building independent power can be important. Finding them and supporting one another is the only solution to your problem. But be sure to find groups that respect you and your safety because some can be abusive or cult-like as well.

You’re tired because you’re alone. Many of us feel this way, but the support of allies is what will energize you and find you a productive and safe outlet for your anger. Because you should be angry. We should all be angry. Shit is fucked everywhere.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

Thank you for your words. I did my best before and now I feel like I'm interested in searching if the thing you told me about actually exists.

[–] hendrik@palaver.p3x.de 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Keep in mind, there are issues in life that come without any solution. Usually you either fight something... Or get used to the situation and make ends meet somehow... If you're out of energy, it's going to be the latter. Or you find a way to flee and go somewhere else, away.

There are a few articles written directly after Trump got elected, telling you how to manage your anxiety etc. I always recommend stoicism if you can't change how things are. Theoretically you should at least try to change things to your liking.

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

State as in a country? Or as in a Red State of the USA?

If the latter, move to a Blue State & Blue City.

If the former, you're kinda fucked. Try to move out if you can, or if not, you just have to deal with it like people have done so throughout the history of humankind with absolute-monarchies that used to dominate the world.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago

Thanks. And it's The Motherland, you know which.

I continue to build my capital to be able to leave, but both the current state and others make leaving harder for obvious reasons. I'm kinda jelly now that my mates used their chance to study in Finland, Spain etc with a chance to get locked into citizenship when they were teens and I missed that opportunity. Now I need to work hard to even stay alive and work twice as hard to move, like it's told in Alice series by Lewis Carrol. I love this book and despise it for how it's real.

[–] Sergio@slrpnk.net 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I was raised in repressive states in Latin America, and I had a lot of anxiety and depression that I thought was just normal until I came to college in the US.

Everyone is different, but I think I could have benefitted from the following advice: Defend yourself like a boxer against the ropes. Build up your strength and look for your moment. Always have a plan.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

I can't have a plan, but my fists may be prepared to beat my way into it, I wish so. Thank you and cheers on leaving the hole you was trapped in.

[–] subignition@fedia.io 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)
[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

Short and on the money.

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 3 points 4 days ago

I would try to think of ways to support any potential resistance against the oppressors, anything i could get away with without drawing attention or getting into trouble if someone notices. Maybe something that might support someone who is willing to take bigger risks.

I live in quite decent country myself and even here i feel like i want to do something like that, seeing how world is going to shit and it will eventually reach here too when consequences start properly hitting. I dont want to even think about what i would want to do if i lived in actually repressive country like america. Nowdays i'm balancing between wanting to do good and cheering for the apocalypse. Mostly because i feel i cant do anything so not acting on evil thoughts feels like improvement.

[–] satanmat@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There are so many negative emotions and comments here.

You are in a weak position, so yes that means you have to work harder.

Elon has money. You don’t have that kind or money to buy influence. so effort and time ; organize, vote, and get out the vote.

And yes. If needed have a plan. Are you a woman or have one in your life? Order Plan C Do you have family out of state or country? See about moving there.

And don’t give up. Fight the whole way. And

Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum!

Outstanding reference, I give it a perfect 5/7

Find little pockets of people with similar views and contribute.

[–] Nanook@lemm.ee 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Let the anger out, and fear no more.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Too many people rely on me. People I hate are crawling in the well-defenced secret places. I can't afford to Hotline Miamee everyone of them.

[–] Nanook@lemm.ee 0 points 1 day ago

I hear you. But they keep on relying cause you keep on helping. I know I did the same for twenty five years. But it’s not good for us. Or for them.

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Direct action.

[–] tiefling@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Don't contain it. Redirect it.

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

I redirect it into my work and art for how long this bullshit war with Urkaine and catrsation of my country happens. But it can't work for years, and I strugle to find a way out. I feel I'd have a hard time containing it anymore.
