Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

convergent evolution is such a head scratcher, nature is full of puzzles, like how humans became to dominate this world, yet a human allegedly wrote the title of this post

TIL why do words keep evolving into titties?

[–] DrSleepless@lemmy.world 27 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Because everyone likes titties

[–] Tujio@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

World cold and hard. Titty warm and soft.

[–] DrSleepless@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

This guy boobs

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 73 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (2 children)

It's the same reason both bats and birds have wings.

This article is trash. It's been established for a long time that bats have wings to frighten criminals.

the tasty king crab that's coveted as a seafood delicacy, aren't even technically "true crabs."

I'm not ready for this today.

[–] fsxylo@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

King crab is technically imitation crab meat.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

I would call it mislabeled, since it's called crab but wasn't made to imitate crab.

[–] DokPsy@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Man, you're not going to like the technicalities of what is and isn't a penguin...

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 5 points 3 weeks ago (5 children)

They wear tuxedos... right?
Right?

They keep evolving into pigs too.

Peccary:

Tapir:

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Thanks, I knew there was at least one more. I feel like there's something else I'm not thinking of as well but I can't place it.

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 16 points 3 weeks ago

I feel like there's something else

yes, pigs

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 weeks ago

IANAS, but it sure seems like most of these pig fuckers just went fully off-road genetically as soon as their two main external sphincters formed during mitosis, and focused everything else afterward on that core concept: Eat & Shit. (punctuation optional; creative emphasis, arrangement, spelling, etc. promoted)

[–] lvxferre@mander.xyz 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Guinea pigs perhaps? I didn't post them because capy represents them as Caviidae.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I think I was thinking of javelina, but they're related to peccaries.

The semantics of this title makes my brain itch

[–] ooli@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (5 children)

Ok, when we're at 100 comments about the ti~~t~~tle, I will finally edit it

[–] conciselyverbose@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

lol throw a colon after TIL and it's good enough.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

lol throw a colon

I did, and now I'm no longer licensed to perform surgery!

[–] Lemjukes@lemm.ee 4 points 3 weeks ago

Still hurts

[–] HowAbt2morrow@futurology.today 3 points 3 weeks ago

Titillating

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 3 weeks ago

Be careful what you ask for on Lemmy... :-P

[–] Default_Defect@midwest.social 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I like that it kinda implies that animals are spontaneously becoming crab often enough to be a problem.

[–] DokPsy@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I mean, when you start categorizing things by phylogenetics instead of phenetics, you realize that certain body plans happen a lot more than expected.

Taste like crab, talk like people.

[–] GiveOver@feddit.uk 18 points 3 weeks ago

If crabs came from animals, why are there still animals?

Nature: "Give it time."

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

note to self: don't evolve into a crab

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

apparently we won't because we're not modular enough

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The big takeaway the casual reader should learn from this is that contrary to the memes it's not "animals" it's "crustaceans" and to some extent arthropods.

Apes won't evolve into crabs unless we do it deliberately.

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Until we do it deliberately.

[–] SynopsisTantilize@lemm.ee 7 points 3 weeks ago

Ah fuck, you guys found the secret ape crab lab, didn't you?

[–] Lemjukes@lemm.ee 15 points 3 weeks ago

This title hurt me physically.

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

Crabs are the most chaotic structures in the universe so, naturally, entropy will always create crabs as order moves to chaos.

[–] Allonzee@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I've also heard kangaroos are further evolved, or more distinctly evolved, from our common ancestor than us.

No claws yet though. Having a biological pocket is cool.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 weeks ago
[–] Blackout@fedia.io 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I want to be one of those crabs that form a conga line and swap shells.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 weeks ago

That'll be the hermit, ironically.
