So I've been noticing most of the cashiers at big supermarket keep asking customers to use self checkout but little do they know that these numbers are being recorded and once executive of that big supermarket see customers have learnt to use self checkout then they will get rid of cashiers and replace with the self checkout. Same goes for cashiers at Petrol station, today I went to fuel up and had an expired voucher. She gave me a discount and then immediately canceled the transaction and said the voucher is expired. At that time I was thinking she's trying to save $2 for a trillion dollar company who's paying her minimum wage. People should use common sense.

I worked as a cashier in a supermarket.

Some stores are very strict about coupons and do monitor what a cashier has in their drawer. I doubt most cashiers would even care if you stole from the store as long as it wasn't their problem.

These people are just trying to keep their jobs and the corporation that has its boot on their neck might be the only place that will hire them. Do you really expect them all to stop working and protest when they see their jobs being replaced? Come on, they have rent to pay and kids to feed. Have more empathy towards those suffering from capitalism.

If you see someone steal from a big box retailer, no you didn't.

Make the minimum wage something people can live on and then we can talk about them making poor decisions.

Why would anyone making that level of income put any effort or thought into the work? Their labor is almost always worth more than what they’re being paid in places that adhere to the US Federal Minimum Wage of $7.25. You know why the service is better at Disney than a local carnival? Cause they get paid a hell of a lot better to do the job.

Minimum wage, minimum effort.

I thought this way but have been told numerous times by retail workers that they like the machines, that they were overworked before they came in and now the workload is manageable.

[–] LonelyWendigo@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Capitalism by design will always overwork labor. In this example, the employees finally feel their workload easing but soon enough there will be fewer of them doing the same work they're doing now and the individuals that remain employeed will be overworked again.

That's true, but hiring more workers and providing better pay and benefits to prevent turnover would have solved the situation as well.

Definitely don't disagree there.

Now as someone who has worked retail, usually (not always) it's because there is a line (some arbitrary number between 3-6) that is too many people in line. So we take you to the next one. But you only need one person to run so many self checkout machines. Typically 4-6. As for the coupon. That is probably the one time she's really allowed to tell a customer no, when typically she has to honor more or less whatever a customer tells her to do, no matter how stupid.

Aren't you just mad the lady at the Petrol station cancel your transaction? By the way, how does using a voucher work with this fine posting of you?

[–] Koen967@feddit.nl 2 points 1 year ago

Guy actually posted to AITA and chose to ignore the results.

Comfortably-off customers casting aspersions on "minimum wage workers" are the absolute pits.

There is lots to say here but you are too clueless to say any of it. FFS

I pretty much just read:

“Tell me, I haven’t worked as a cashier without telling me it”

[–] tallwookie@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

in that vein, I find it odd that some businesses that could really use self checkout aisles dont have them - like Target - they're always understaffed and there's always long lines. like, just install some self checkout machines already, jeez.

[–] phillaholic@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Weird, every Target I’ve been to has a row of shelf checkouts.

[–] AttackBunny@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

The ones in my area frequently have all the self checkouts open, and no registers with human cashiers open.

[–] tallwookie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

maybe it's just the ones in my area. or they chose not to upgrade? i dunno
