Hello! I had a customer request a new design but then changed their mind on the color. So now I have this awesome planter that I need to put something in.

I've got a sansevieria that needs a home, but I feel like that shouldn't be up out of sight.

What is a cool plant that might drape over the sides that could go with this cool purple?

My MiL planted a seed from some fruit she had eaten. It kind of looks like a mango to me, but several of the leaves are conjoined. Any ideas?

It's my boyfriend's birthday next month and I wanted to buy him a plant he hasn't yet got. Currently we have:

  • Lots of monsteras
  • Syngonium
  • Pothos
  • Jades
  • Snake plants
  • String of hearts
  • Ferns (staghorn, blue star, boston)
  • Peace lilies
  • Rubber plant
  • Tradescantia
  • Spider plants

He particularly likes monsteras! But if there are any relatively easy to care for, or 'essential' house plants that it sounds like they'd fit well with what we already have I'd love to hear. Our house is pretty shady but there are certain areas that get a bit more sunlight in the afternoon. Thank you :)

It's quite big too!

I posted a picture of this plant on Reddit a while back proud of how long its vines had gotten. A jackass Redditor commented and said that the plant was light starved (he had more to say, but I'll leave that out).

Anyway, is my plant doing OK? Does it need more light? I'm training some of the vines over the curtain rod so that it can get more light from the window.

TL;DR: apparently the management at my apartment complex considers plants to be "Seasonal decoration." Here's the email chain:

My landlord: You are in violation of your lease with the condition of your patio/deck area. The only thing allowed on your porch is patio furniture. Correct the issues shown in the attachment ASAP! If you have any questions please contact the property Manager M-F 9 am – 5 pm.

Thank You from our office staff and maintenance team! [Attached photo: My balcony seen from below, showing my one plant.]

Me: I've just re-read my lease agreement and could not find the clause you are referring to. The closest thing I could find is this, from the Community Rules Addendum, Use of Unit and Common Areas:

"3. It is the Tenant’s responsibility to keep balconies and patios in a clean and orderly condition. Storing of cartons, garbage, boxes, appliances, or other visually objectionable items on the patio or balcony is prohibited. Clotheslines or clothes hanging over balconies are not permitted. Hanging clothes and towels out to dry or use of the patio or balcony as a general storage area is not permitted. Seasonal and holiday decorations are not allowed without prior written permission from Landlord. If allowed, seasonal and holiday decorations must be reasonable, must not interfere with or disturb other tenants’ quiet enjoyment of the Community, and must be promptly removed within a reasonable time after the holiday, not to exceed 14 days or as otherwise directed by Landlord. Grilling or barbecuing is not permitted on balconies or patios."

It does NOT say "The only thing allowed on your porch is patio furniture," nor does it make any mention of prohibiting plants. If you are referring to another clause, please let me know.

My landlord: While there is no direct mention of potted plants, they fall under the category of seasonal and holiday decoration.

Potted plants are considered seasonal items not currently permitted by the property manager. If you would like to, you may stop by our leasing office during the week to speak with the property manager regarding the use of unit and common areas.

Me: Plants are not "seasonal and holiday decoration." They are plants. They do not get put away for the winter, they do not celebrate a holiday, they just sit there. All year long. If potted plants are not permitted, then the lease agreement needs to be rewritten to reflect that. The lease which I signed does not prohibit potted plants.

My landlord: If you have any comments or concerns regarding use of unit common areas, please stop by our leasing office to speak directly with our property manager.

Me: If you have any further concerns, please contact me via email. Otherwise, I consider this matter resolved.

Thank you for your understanding

(That last email was sent after closing time. I guess I'll find out tomorrow how that goes over.)

I'm not sure what's eating my Hosta's, or what I can do about it, but I wrote a picture story about it in a nice rhyme. I hope you all enjoy.

This Guzmania momma was a gift from my s/o a few months ago. My first bromeliad 💖 This is 2 of the 3 pups she's sending up! So excited!!

(ps. I just got another one of a different type - I'm going to need help with the id, but I'll ask over at the plant-id place)

Really proud of this little guy. Just over a year ago he got dropped off a shelf and was in pretty rough shape. Salvaged what I could and stuck it back in a pot. Wasn't expecting much but here we are now!

This is what he looked like last July:

My newest plant. I just love the look of this little fella. :)

I especially like this leaf

If you look really close, you can see the poor things roots under a very large branch.

I purchased my fiddy from Costco early this year for 28 bucks. While it never dropped any leaves it also didn't put out any new leaves either. I repotted it back in April but I noticed the roots had already grew from the bottom of the new pot, so I repotted it again. After the 2nd repot, it finally grew! I'm so happy that it did the thing!!

I love it so much!

My beautiful cucumber is being attacked and I don’t know by what :(. Does anyone know what can create this nets? They are full of tiny insect and the leaves that have them are dying :(.

What can I do?

I'm really trying to not murder my monstera but as a beginner I honestly don't know why this new leaf is turning black. Did I overwater the poor thing? She has been vibing for about 4 months without issues.

I'm sure it likes the care it's been receiving.

Hi folks! This is potentially outside the scope of this community but Im hoping some botanistically minded people might be able to help me out here. I have several rose plants on my property and Ive always wanted to harvest the rose hips. The problem is they turn yellow and then rot long before the first frost.

I was wondering if anyone knew why this might be?

Bonus spider in picture.

I repotted all of my plants a few weeks ago and then didn't transition them slowly enough to being outside for the summer. A bunch got burns. Last weekend, we had a short but fast and windy thunderstorm roll through which knocked over several plants. My little andersoni (Swiss cheese one) lost two other stems that I am trying to prop now, but this one is hanging on.

I'm seeing new leaves on most of my plants. The tiny Monstera deliciosa on the left grew from roots I hadn't cleared out when I decided to behead the larger plant (which also has a new leaf). Those two leaves popped out within a few weeks of each other!

I'm hoping I can avoid any other major issues over the rest of the summer, but I'm still learning a lot.

I've had this cactus for a few years, and for a while it's had a problem where it grows so tall that it can't stand up. You can see in the photo that I have it tied to some stakes to keep it upright - if not for those it would literally uproot itself in under a day.

Why might this be? I don't know all that much about houseplants. I water this cactus (and my other cactuses, which are not the same species) once every two weeks, about 1 to 1.5 cups of water. I use some cactus fertilizer like twice a year, pretty inconsistently. It lives perpetually indoors with those three light rods visible in the picture as its sole light source (On for 12 hours a day).

Given how little I know about proper plant care, I'm sure none of that is ideal - but is any of it the obvious culprit for why this happens? What should I be doing better?

Thanks for any help.

P.S. Those two nodules just above the lower string are brand new, and it's never branched out like that before - what should I expect them to become? Round bulbs? Branches? Flowers? Nothing at all? The tip top of the cactus being white is also very recent.

I was given a Montsera(?) cutting and I don't really know if this leaf is too wrinkled? It's a minefield trying to read about and understand if I have over or under watered. I just don't know what this plant actually wants.

My usual approach is to assume I have over watered if a plant looks unhappy, but I don't know if these bounce back after a period of under watering, if I hold back on watering more now.
