It's awesome there are already so many reproduxible builds on fdroid. Why aren't there more? Do devs simply not care enough? Or is it too difficult?

Sneak preview. Read more on the page itself :

F-Droid and F-Droid Basic were updated to 1.20.0-alpha1. Targets got bumped and they have their first victim, the panic button. Was that something you ever used?

But it’s not all bad news, a Bluetooth crash is fixed, there’s tighter integration with the unattended updates code for Android 14 and later, permissions icons and screenshots look better and the install buttons were enlarged so your locale translations fit better.

Did you get a chance to update and test? Community News

@linsui felt the breeze first:

A month ago we announced that the beloved Geometric Weather app was removed. We promised news soon, and here they are, Breezy Weather, A powerful, open-source Material Design weather app is available, featuring a beautiful design and a special F-Droid flavor: all weather sources are FOSS. The standard flavor is also completely FOSS but includes weather sources that might need API keys to be accessible.

We’ve been using our PR skills to reach developers as needed. For a while, F-Droid contributors where helping to include more apps from the Proton team, (by the way ProtonVPN - Secure and Free VPN was updated to 5.2.40.2). Proton’s response was positive and a developer soon contacted us. After some back and forth, the app was built by our CI, tested and included. As an update was dropped between cycles, Proton Pass, was built and published. Then why isn’t it listed in Newly Added Apps? Well… the app crashes on start. Proton devs are working on a fix and ask you to refrain from installing the app for now. We will inform you of future developments as we have them.

@Licaon_Kter might not use emojis:

We are sad to see that OpenBoard didn’t get developed in the last 2 years. Many others felt the same and have forked it to continue working on it. HeliBoard, Customizable open-source keyboard, is now live, 100% offline and expands on the feature set of the old app.

as title, if I try to share multiple image to k9mail seems that compression is done for all but just one is attached in the mail. Any solution or alternative to this scenario? Thanks

Noob here (and I posted some of this already as a reply o an older post: https://lemmy.world/comment/8190997 )

I actually just installed HeliBoard through Obtainium, and have a bunch of questions.

First of all, I’m confused – I installed HeliBoard_1.2-release.apk . I didn’t really know how HeliBoard_1.2-debug.apk and HeliBoard_1.2-nouserlib.apk were different.

Also, I just installed that and nothing else. It’s giving me suggestions, but no corrections. Is that because I didn’t install any dictionaries? If so, how do I install one – do I just click on the download icon here https://codeberg.org/Helium314/aosp-dictionaries/src/branch/main/dictionaries/main_en_us.dict ? And what do I do then? Sorry, noob here.

On the other languages and autocorrect issues discussed here: https://lemmy.world/post/12769494 – it sounds like it used to have the equivalent of GBoard’s globe icon you could click on to switch languages but not anymore? You have to go to settings and uncheck English and check whatever other language you want to use?

And, it seems like I can do the equivalent of Shift + key on a standalone keyboard (for example, to get 1 instead of Q), but I don’t know how to, or what that’s even called.

Thank you!

If you use mobile data only on your phones, and you update your apps by transferring apks through local connection (offline), bad news.

Saving to external storage is gone, and every single phone will need to download updates through Aurora separately, either by using up mobile data or connecting to WiFi.

On version 4.4.3 this feature is already gone.

Dev:

... both settings were dropped. I am open to patches if someone can implement it again using the documents API which is recommended by Android.

Source

If you know any app that can extract split apks, so that it can transferred and installed afterwards on another phone, please let me know. Thanks

I turned on my old HTC espresso after a decade and I remembered that I loved this app.

It creates an unique profile image for contacts without a profile picture

So now when you open the contact list instead of having a list of capital letters in a circle you have a list of capital letters in a more colorful circle

Unfortunately it's now outdated and discontinued, but it still works on Android 14.

Seems like some asshole took the source code and republished the app as is, without credit, in the Amazon app store to get some financial incentive (around 2014 blackberry paid devs to republish their apps and many assholes decided that it was a good idea to "steal" open source apps)

After this, dev took development private but then got tired of the update treadmill that Google forces on the play store, so the apps were automatically delisted.

Luckily, fdroid doesn't have such artificial limitations on outdated apps that still work as intended.

Refreshing the main F-Droid repository shows it as new. Can't find it on the website yet. Nice for Proton users to have it on F-Droid.

I've been wanting to move from Mixplorer to Ghost Commander for a while now, but whenever I move an image, then it stops showing on Aves (fdroid) and whenever I move an audio file then the same happens with vinyl.

This files are still on my device, and Vlc and Fossify gallery can still interact with them, but not Aves, nor Vinyl.

Does someone know how to fix this?

All I want to do is move to Ghost Commander, I don't want to change my gallery or music app.

Is there any open source file manager not avalaible on Fdroid?

I've tried them all and Ghost files seems to be the one that can best fulfill my needs.

HeliBoard keyboard is an improved fork of the now-unmaintained OpenBoard keyboard. It does not require internet permission, allowing it to be used 100% offline.

Features

  • Add dictionaries for suggestions and spell check

    • Build your own, or access them here, or in the experimental section (quality may vary)
    • Additional dictionaries for emojis or scientific symbols can be used to provide suggestions (similar to "emoji search")
    • Note that for Korean layouts, suggestions only work using this dictionary; the tools in the dictionary repository cannot create working dictionaries
  • Customize keyboard themes (style, colors, and background image)

    • Can follow the system's day/night setting on Android 10+ (and on some versions of Android 9)
    • Can follow dynamic colors for Android 12+
  • Customize keyboard layouts (only available when disabling system languages)

  • Multilingual typing

  • Glide typing (only with closed-source library ☹️)

    • Library not included in the app, as there is no compatible open-source library available
    • Can be extracted from GApps packages ("swypelibs"), or downloaded here
  • Clipboard history

  • One-handed mode

  • Split keyboard (only available if the screen is large enough)

  • Number pad

  • Backup and restore your learned word/history data

Hidden Functionality

Features that may go unnoticed, and further potentially useful information

  • Long-pressing the Clipboard Key (the optional one in the suggestion strip) pastes system clipboard contents.
  • Long-pressing keys in the suggestion strip toolbar pins them to the suggestion strip.
  • Long-press the Comma-key to access Clipboard View, Emoji View, One-handed Mode, Settings, or Switch Language:
    • Emoji View and Language Switch will disappear if you have the corresponding key enabled;
    • For some layouts, it's not the Comma-key, but the key at the same position (e.g. it's q for Dvorak layout).
  • When incognito mode is enabled, no words will be learned, and no emojis will be added to recents.
  • Sliding key input: Swipe from shift or symbol key to another key. This will enter a single uppercase key or symbol and return to the previous keyboard.
  • Hold shift or symbol key, press one or more keys, and then release shift or symbol key to return to the previous keyboard.
  • Long-press a suggestion in the suggestion strip to show more suggestions, and a delete button to remove this suggestion.
  • Swipe up from a suggestion to open more suggestions, and release on the suggestion to select it.
  • Long-press an entry in the clipboard history to pin it (keep it in clipboard until you unpin).
  • Swipe left in clipboard view to remove an entry (except when it's pinned)
  • Select text and press shift to switch between uppercase, lowercase, and capitalize words
  • You can add dictionaries by opening the file
    • This only works with content-uris and not with file-uris, meaning that it may not work with some file explorers.
  • Debug mode / debug APK
    • Long-press a suggestion in the suggestion strip twice to show the source dictionary.
    • When using debug APK, you can find Debug Settings within the Advanced Preferences, though the usefulness is limited except for dumping dictionaries into the log.
      • For a release APK, you need to tap the version in About several times, then you can find debug settings in Advanced Preferences.
      • When enabling Show suggestion infos, suggestions will have some tiny numbers on top showing some internal score and source dictionary.
    • In the event of an application crash, you will be prompted whether you want the crash logs when you open the Settings.
    • When using multilingual typing, the space bar will show a confidence value used for determining the currently used language.
  • For users doing manual backups with root access: Starting at Android 7, some files and the main shared preferences file are not in the default location because the app is using device-protected storage. This is necessary so the settings and layout files can be read before the device is unlocked, e.g., at boot. The files are usually located in /data/user_de/0/<package_id>/, though the location may depend on the device and Android version.

Planned features and improvements:

  • Customizable functional key layout
    • Will likely result in having the same functional key layout for alphabet and symbols layouts
  • Support for alt, ctrl, meta and fn (#479)
  • Less complicated addition of new keyboard languages (e.g. #519)
  • Additional and customizable key swipe functionality
    • Some functionality will not be possible when using glide typing
  • Ability to enter all emojis independent of Android version (optional, #297)
  • (limited) support for customizing all internally used colors
  • Add and enable emoji dictionaries by default (if available for language)
  • Clearer / more intuitive arrangement of settings
    • Maybe hide some less used settings by default (similar to color customization)
  • Customizable currency keys
  • Customizable clipboard toolbar keys (#513, #403)
  • Ability to export/import (share) custom colors
  • Make use of the .com key in URL fields (currently only available for tablets)
    • With language-dependent TLDs
  • Internal cleanup (a lot of over-complicated and convoluted code)
  • (optionally?) move toolbar key pinning to a setting, so long press actions on unpinned toolbar keys are available
  • Bug fixes

What will not be added:

  • Material 3 (not worth adding 1.5 MB to app size)
  • Dictionaries for more languages (you can still download them)
  • Anything that requires additional permissions

So i recently got my first android phone after having been an iphone user for years. So far i am really happy and especially enjoy finding foss alternatives to as many apps as possible.

However i cant seem to find a gameboy emulator, one oft the things i missed on ios all those years. Mostly for gba games, maybe gbc too. Does someone here have a recommendation? All the ones i found on fdroid were incompatible.

Hi guys! Is there any smart gallery app that can help tag/search the gallery pictures through automatically created tags, such as objects/things recognized in the pictures, locations etc? This is a rather convenient feature in some apple and samsung phones, which I think would be nice to have...But I reckon must consume some CPU/battery. I'd still want it scanning the gallery from time to time, if it was a private local process.

I find it useful when I have to ask for files from another person without having to ask them to install the app.

Trebleshot has this option(screenshot attached) and I'm currently using it. But it's source seems to archived, so looking for an alternative if it exists.

Is android nearby share enough for this? Generally, I think that foss apps give me faster transfer speeds overy nearby share. Or is it just placebo?

Hi all,

the firefox clone Fennec from F-Droid uses way to much storage.

I was not able to clean it. I am also very afraid of loosing history and stored passwords.

Anybody knows how to savely reduce this? The big storage must be caused by cached Images and or Videos, right?

I use GeometricWeather and this app is no more present in the repo. How could i know why this app was removed ?

The Lawnchair launcher finally got an update after years of nothing. It was just a nightly update but at least some movement is happening.

New in F-Droid. Happy to see this. In the past I used Noice but then Noice wanted Internet access and I stopped using it. It comes with Anti-Features warning. Soothing on the other hand requires very little permissions.
