Most distros have official forums, and may have sections specifically for people using Linux for the first time, which can also be great sources of information.

This is a frequent source of frustration for me, too. Can't even tell if it's cli or gui a lot of the time, based on the documentation. If I could just see what it looks like, I'd have a good idea right away of whether it might meet my needs.

My hate comes from wanting it to work like LView Pro. There's no Linux image manipulation program that comes close to meeting the standard they set in 2001.

Switching from QWERTY to Colemak on my phone was effortless, just installed it and started using it easily. Using QWERTY on my bf's phone feels awkward now, even though I use it every day with my computer keyboard. They definitely seem to occupy different mental spaces.

Failing the captcha doesn't mean you lose your user name. I failed a few times. There's a button you can click to generate a new captcha so you can try again.

When it imports photos, it should move them into the dated folders automatically. Check the options to make sure it's all set up the way you prefer.

I use Shotwell to organize my photos. It can handle creating folders by date automatically, and allows you to rate and tag. It works well for my needs.

I've used Yacy for years. It's very customizeable and gives good results, and I like that I can curate, to some degree, what it finds. Biggest drawback is that I don't always feel like starting up a server to do a search.
