What a great idea! I love Bash scripting, so I'll look into doing this myself for fun tomorrow.

I download when I have free time to fill / kill. I watch one genre of videos and periodically check on a number of channels that have that content. I watch each video working down the list deleting them as I consume them. In the rare case that I want to save something, I toss it in an unmanaged directory of internet content.

My Plex library is where managed content lives. Stuff from the internet doesn't deserve that level of care (in my system of data management).

I run a Plex server for my movie and television library. I just watch YT videos once and delete them, mostly in the background while I do other things. But I'll look into both tools regardless because automation is always interesting to me. Thanks for the tips!

Yes. The only positive thing the Dilbert creator ever did for the world was teach me (and others) that Marketing is bad. (He's a fucking creep and a Trump weirdo.)

I've landed on that page a couple of times. I'm just waiting to be blocked.

I almost never watch videos on youtube because I download them and watch them locally. The two things that I use to download them are Downie (Mac) and yt-download (cross platform). This helps me avoid ads unless they are baked into the video. I also like to grab a bunch of content all at once and then watch at my leisure.

I got into a habit of falling asleep on the sofa because watching tv was the only way I could fall asleep with insomnia. That last years until moving and getting a new sofa. The new sofa wasn't ready at the new place and I had no choice but to sleep in my bed (there's no television in the bedroom). I still move to the sofa if I wake up in the middle of the night and feel restless.

When I was around 20yo, I spent a summer with a new group of friends pretending I knew everyone's names. It was anxiety hell. Today, I realize that I can just admit that I forget names and ask and it's no problem. But that was an interesting summer.

As many folks here now recognize, the story about Backpage was grossly misleading. While the narrative pushed by politicians and the media was that the company was engaged in sex trafficking, the DOJ had actually commended the company for being a strong partner in the fight against sex trafficking. Indeed, the eventual takedown of Backpage days before FOSTA went into effect (which we were told was necessary to shut down Backpage) has been shown to make life more difficult for law enforcement trying to stop sex trafficking.

But I thought politicians told us the truth? /s

What a dumbass. “Think I’ll just directly violate the findings of a court and see if they notice.”

Chuck Feeney is unique on this list of billionaires who went broke because his substantial net worth loss was intentional. Feeney founded Duty Free Shoppers, the airport retailer, then launched private equity firm General Atlantic, accumulating a net worth of around $8 billion. He decided to give virtually all his money away to various domestic and international charities and philanthropic efforts over his last 40 years or so. In September 2020, Feeney closed down his philanthropy company, having given away his wealth, minus retirement savings for him and his wife.

The only "good one" on the list. Also:

Some serious crazy eyes going on there.

Again?!

Rest of the world: I guess they overhyped that issue because nothing bad happened.

Streaming only. I was pirating tv shows for years until I could pay for what I want.

I used to like him. I worked for the company when he took over. On the first day in the driver's seat, he sent an email to all employees stating that the policy on company-matched donations to charities was being expanded. I can't remember the details, but it was something about adding charities that SJ considered too political or something (SJ liked to keep the brand away from controversy, which is why you've never been able to get a porn app in the App Store).

I thought it was a classy way of signaling to everyone, "I'm in charge now." I really had a lot of respect for Tim Apple as a result.

The way he's fucked things around for third party developers with the App Store tax and locking down what developers can build has been so tone-deaf in the last however many years that Apple released a breakthrough hardware device (Vision Pro) and it's basically useless because no one wants to build for it. I know that he's sucking up to ensure that the admin favors his company's needs wrt manufacturing in China, but it's still a feckless move. Fuck Tim Apple. He's part of the problem now. Not like Ol' Lonnie or Zuck, but still a problem.

I remember when I liked him better when I liked him better.

I remember when being in tech was cool (in say 2009). Now it’s just some shitty job to funnel money to these gross creeps.

Listed on Patreon at the moment, but not yet on the homepage or in the private RSS feed. I got an email notification about the new eps via Patreon, so presumably they’ll be available everywhere else shortly. The episodes are a combined 6h 45m!

I hope this doesn’t break any rules for this community. This podcast is about as non-sensational and well-researched as any journalistic article on historical topics, so this seemed like the best audience.

(I’m deliberately off Lemmy due to social issues in my country for the sake of my mental health. The mobile page on my instance doesn’t show the rules and I’m signing out right after posting this. Apologies if this was a prohibited post. Please feel free to repost somewhere else if needed as I won’t be logged in to see replies from mods or others.)

Enjoy! I know I will. Love this show. Best wishes to all history nerds reading this.

(Screenshot to validate claims about the eps and their length.)

As a result, most surgeons report experiencing discomfort while performing minimal-access surgery, a 2022 study found. About one-fifth of surgeons polled said they would consider retiring early because their pain was so frequent and uncomfortable. A good mixed-reality headset, then, might allow a surgeon to look at a patient’s surgical area and, without looking up, virtual screens that show them the laparoscopy camera and a patient’s vitals.

Most people get excited about new iPhones. I’m always more interested in Apple’s October Mac updates.

Todd’s urgent dismissal of the documentary reads to Hoback like an attempt to throw Satoshi-hunters off the scent. “It doesn’t surprise me at all that Peter would go on the offense. He’s a master of game theory—it’s what he does. He has spent a lot of years now muddying the waters,” says Hoback. “He’s an unbelievable genius.”

I haven't seen the docu, but I did like his (Hoback's) docu about Qanon, Q: Into the Storm.

I hate him so much.
