The Israeli government did not tamper with the Hezbollah devices that exploded, defense and intelligence officials say. It manufactured them as part of an elaborate ruse.

Yes, but they are all up-side down.

Every time, I'm ready to jump the Ubuntu ship and go back to Debian or Mint, they announce something interesting; something I'd at least want to try.

Yes, price is the point. Of course, a Mercedes is going to nicer than a Toyota, but is it worth its price tag?

Standard SMS/MMS are the de facto standard in the US

SMS have been used extensively around the world. That's texting in it's original form. And we still use SMS to bootstrap WhatsApp or Signal.

But MMS? Phones and carriers have supported this long before smartphones, but did people really use it? Are MMS free in the US? Because in Europe, before WhatsApp and Signal took over, the was a price tag on SMS (last non-zero price I remember is 0.09€, now free) and MMS (no idea because no one uses it, but I believe 0.39€ was typical at some point).

Tell them about the app store

There's an app for that

I understand all this, but how ste the videos actually sent if it's neither RCS nor a link (which could have any resolution).

MMS? Like caveman?

In this case, Apple and the wife are both to blame. This is

  • ancient technology
  • that was never really used anywhere

Come on.

Metric units aka SI units aka sanity

I miss the times when bodies found off the Sicilian coast meant Mafia.

The decomposed bodies were discovered near the island of Sicily, which lies off the southwestern tip of the Italian mainland.

The bodies were taken to another Italian island, Lampedusa, about 350 kilometers (217 miles) away.

The bodies are believed to have been on board a boat that sunk earlier this week in Libyan waters, Italian media said, citing officials.

So, even if they are dead we push them back to Lampedusa. And claim that they sunk in Syrian waters. Because nothing bad can happen in Europe.

They have those at airports.

Yes. And depending on the the VM and the app, you can get a 'seamless mode' that looks like a native Linux app.

VMs work most of the time quite well if you have enough RAM. (The VM always works, some applications will detect unusual hardware and may complain, e.g. unsupported GPU. Any sane software should run, though (e.g. with gpu acceleration).)

Rasberry Pis and similar are sometimes sold as credit-card sized, but they are not portable, really, have huge Ethernet ports and no display or keyboard. Those are on the too-big side for what i am looking for.

In the other hand, you could say that SIM cards or USB devices are technically computers, but they lack a user interface. They are too small.

Is there something small with a usuable display and input method; something that looks like a calculator or tiny smartphone? Does not need a battery (although that's a plus). Does not need WiFi or 5G (although that's plus). Needs some standard method to communicate with the outside world (USB, Bluetooth, NFC, Wifi, ...). Should easily fit in a pocket, wallet, purse.

Ideally something that can run a minimal Linux or Android?

Twilio will abandon Authy desktop, a good opportunity to switch to an open-source app. That is if you manage to export the tokens from Authy. Without a convenient export, many users will be stuck.

The guides you can find online require an old versions of the desktop app. Is there a known way today? Do we know how/where Authy stores the secrets on-device?

Today, I enabled quad9 dns for my home network, and archive.today now requires a captcha, which results in an infinite loop.

A similar problem was reported some months ago for Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1

Posting here to see whether it's just me or everyone. Is this a know problem?

Is there a way to redirect youtube links to NewPipe or similar either systemwide or at last when the link opens in Firefox?

I understand the free apps need ads, but I'd rather not watch that video than watching TWO video ads.

Wanted:

  • large screen
  • good battery life
  • great camera
  • long device lifetime, i.e. repairability, software and security updates, swappable battery, ...
  • enough RAM (8GB) and built-in storage (256GB)
  • SD card slot and 3.5mm won't hurt (but we use wireless headphones all the time)

The competition are (from my POV):

  • Samsung S23+ (or similar)
  • Motorola Edge 40 Pro (or similar)
  • Google Pixel 8 Pro

I ruled out all other vendors due to disappointing update promises. Motorola with 4 years security updates promised (out of which the first year has already passed if the model is not brand new) is the minimum.

All phones are stretching the budget; must be really good to justify the expense. Benchmark for "great" is better than the previous generation (S10).
