We are 30 minutes away from the Scary Fast Apple event.

I came across an Apple event bingo card from the Basic Apple Guy blog.

Are there any items on the list you don't expect to happen or 100% sure will happen? Is there anything missing? Let's get the conversation started.

The $1600 MacBook Pro only has 8GB of RAM. That is completely unacceptable.

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Offering a pro model with 8GB of RAM is pretty silly. Anybody who buys that is not getting the proper experience.

[–] elgordio@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago

I had a feeling it was going to be 8/256 when it when ‘business owners’ were described as one of the key user types. It’s the laptop the IT department can give to management that’s got a pro sticker on it, without having to give them something over powered. It’s a vanity thing. Actual pro’s will get something better, everyone else is probably better off with an Air.

Lemmy needs a live thread option

[–] maegul@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

So I think the “chat” sort is supposed to be that I think. Maybe not all apps support it. And I suspect it’s got some bug too.

[–] MichelleG@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And the event has ended, which apparently was all shot on an iPhone and edited on a Mac.
It was a 30-minute presentation, straight and to the point. However, I don't know if this really needed to be a special event on a Monday night before Halloween.

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I actually liked that they kept this fairly brief. The "shot on iPhone" reveal was cute.

[–] impiri@lemm.ee 19 points 1 year ago

You can really spend $1700 for an iMac or $1800 for a MacBook Pro that come with only 8GB RAM in their base configurations. C'mon.

It's interesting that they keep harping on "when upgrading from an Intel-based Mac". I guess their data shows that a lot of users are still on Intel chips. Or maybe it just makes a better comparison?

Apple is the king of better number bigger graph.

It’s definitely a bit of both. But nobody with an M1 Mac should really consider upgrading to an M3 unless they really want some specific new features.

[–] shaggy959500@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I’m guessing it’s a little bit of both…

[–] maegul@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I’m so on an old Intel MacBook Pro. Getting 16 GB RAM (which back then was more of an unusual investment) really has helped the machine stay quite workable.

The only problematic part of the laptops age is that Apple no longer supports it with OS upgrades 🤷.

[–] Etnaphele@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Take a look at open core legacy patcher

[–] zunisoft@techhub.social 4 points 1 year ago

@maegul @sosodev I had a similar MacBook Pro setup. When Apple quit supporting OS upgrades for it, I was able to install Linux on it and it screams!

[–] xts@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

RIP Touchbar design. At long last.

[–] cabron_offsets@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Good riddance.

[–] MichelleG@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The iMac is being upgraded with the M3 chip. I was hoping for a better screen and different colors.

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Does the iMac really need an updated screen? Genuine question because I don't know what it's capable of at the moment.

[–] akhenaten0@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

27 inch would be better!

[–] xts@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

M3 Pro/Max already?? Daaamn

Three new chips: M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max on 3nm with "Dynamic Caching."

[–] MichelleG@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

The Apple store is officially down.

[–] MichelleG@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

OK, the new Macbook Pros are FAST!!! And in a new color. Oh, it's Space Black.

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

A MBP with 128GB of unified memory really outclasses most personal computers. They're not wrong about that.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Until something fails. And then you have to replace or throw out the whole thing because the ram, SSD, video card, and just about everything else is integrated and not socketed/replaceable/upgradable.

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Their repairability does suck but they can still be repaired. It’s definitely not a trash it as soon as something fails situation.

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I really was hoping they would have picked a bold color.

[–] MichelleG@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago
[–] MichelleG@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago
[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Up to 128GB of unified memory for M3 max confirmed. That is seriously beefy.

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

"apple highlights gaming performance" and "a minimum of 5 graphs are presented" seem guaranteed to me. That's the standard when they have a chip update to present lol.

[–] MichelleG@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The video feed is live now. As in previous events, Apple is streaming music, this time Spooky-inspired.

Song - Dark (feat. Greentea Peng) by Goldie, James Davidson and Subjective
Song - Ride or Die by Sevdaliza & Villano Antillano
Song - HAHA by Not the Twos
Song - A Barely Lit Path by Oneohtrix Point Never

[–] itscozydownhere@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Too late here. See you tomorrow guys, night night

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

You have to wonder why they are holding the event outside of North American business hours.

[–] MichelleG@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Wow, they are updating the Macbook Pro.

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Making some bold GPU claims. Supposedly it's 2x perf over the m2 line.

I wish they would have given some details behind how dynamic caching works. Without any context it kinda sounds like nonsense to me.

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Why are they talking about iMessage on Mac like it's a new feature? I guess people outside of the Mac ecosystem might not know.

[–] Z4rK@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What a distance in messaging from “to the creators and misfits” to “hard work hard work hard work”

Space Gray (Black) is so pro lmao

[–] sosodev@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh yeah, now we're getting plenty of graphs and efficiency claims lol

I think that counts as "reference to Apple having the best notebooks", right?

Also, "chip lab visit" of course.

[–] Ketchup@reddthat.com 2 points 1 year ago

And the 27” iMac everyone keeps wishing for didn’t come. I’m not too sad about it. I can appreciate having a mini and a powerful laptop and I don’t have the Apple display but having all the power tied up in an all in one is freeing. I can upgrade that mini now much more cheaply and easily. And I can use the screen with my laptop instead of target display mode.

[–] M500@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Maybe a low cost one?

Like just lower the price of the m1 air and call it the MacBook or something.

I’d love to have a Mac, but they are too pricy at the moment.

M1 air on an edu discount, bought with discounted apple giftcards (10% off is easy to find) isn't that bad at all.

Considering Apple updated the 14" & 16" MacBook Pro to M2 chips the same time as Mac Mini back in Jan 2023, and many believed that it was delayed due to supply chain and production issues, supposedly the release schedule was Oct-Nov 2022 in previous year.

Now that MacBook Pros get the M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max, why didn't the Mac Mini get the refreshed as well ?

Will Apple just simply make the Mac Mini the drag queen that stretched 3-4 years refresh cycle ?

[–] TubeTalkerX@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I was really hoping they were going to announce they purchased the Paul Lynn Halloween Special and converted it to 4K!

The event is starting...
Starting off with a Mac-related video showing off how people use their Macs.
I love it. They used the Apple logo as the Moon.
