I have 5 hearts and 9 defense from my armor. My strongest weapon has 20 damage. I noticed I'm too unequipped for most stuff. I get 1 shot by any miniboss and boss bokos.

I don't have much of the map. Only the first tower and a tiny bit of depths. Any advice? Where can I get decent early-mid game loot?

The story quests should be pointing you in a couple of different directions by now. You should be equipped enough to follow either of those at this point.

The overland route specifically will net you plenty of shrines along the way to continue pumping up your hearts - there are a few caves too and those are always full of surprises.

Just be smart about what fights you take on along the way. Two things about fights in this game:

  1. It's okay to run. If you encounter anything you aren't prepared to fight, just run. Typically you can get away on foot (or horse if you have one). If it comes down to it, warping away is also fine.
  2. Especially in the early game, fights are trial and error. And you aren't going to find the loot you're looking for without taking on fights. You're probably going to die a few times, and that's okay.

The game doesn't punish you for dying, unless you're overly sensitive to loading screens. Try different strategies, get a feel for the advanced combat mechanics. You'll probably end up at a few different combat training shrines if you're following the early game quests and that'll help you out if you're unfamiliar with some of the more advanced techniques.

I have been doing OK with fights but I have an unrelated question.

For some reason the doors of the towers won't open. I have got the first tower. Is tger eanything I need to do to be able to use the others?

[–] nromdotcom@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

As Tolookah says, always look for a Hudson Construction Co representative at or near the tower. Often they'll have a small request for you to help the finish the tower and grant you access.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago

Some of the towers are puzzles to get into them. (Many?). Sometimes there's someone nearby who will tell you what they see is wrong, or to give a hint.

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Also. What story bits are meant to be done first?

[–] nromdotcom@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You should have received two quests at Lookout Landing (which I'm assuming you've been to and that is the one tower you've unlocked so far - of not, go to Lookout Landing).

One is granted by Purah and notes 4 Regional Phenomena for you to go investigate. Talking to other folks around Lookout Landing will gently nudge you toward one of the specific phenomena.

The other is granted, if I remember correctly, by Josha and involves investigating a nearby chasm to get a picture of a statue. This quest is classified as a side adventure and not a main quest, but you'll still want to do it sooner or later.

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Should I arm myself better for the phenomena?

[–] nromdotcom@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Don't overthink it. Regional Phenomena is a long quest and each investigation is a quest (at least) in itself.

As you make your way to different destinations as part of the quest, you will naturally come across shrines, caves, side quests, and enemy encounters such that you will constantly be getting rewards and upgrading things.

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

Thank you for the tips

[–] rbhfd@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

If the tower won't open, look around the tower. There typically will be someone trying to fix it, but they'll need some help.

[–] rbhfd@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are you fusing things, like monster parts, to your weapons? This will make a huge difference.

Other than that, just play the game. Do shrines to get more hearts and stamina. Explore, then you'll automatically find better armour, or you'll be able to buy it.

Some mini-bosses, like lynels or Gleeoks, will simply be too hard for you know. Others, like Hinoxes, should be doable if you know their weak spot.

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I fuse everything. What is a gleeok?

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My kid fuses everything, fusing a bow to a stick doesn't do enough good, horns are great for fusing. (I had this conversation minutes ago)

Gleeoks are a bigger mini boss, think of the multi headed dragon in the original Zelda game.

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Black boko horns are hard to get but amazing for fusion. Are gleeoks common? I'm interested now

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 year ago

Gleeoks are the three head dragons (not the spirit dragons). One is on the giant bridge above lake Hylia.

[–] FlagonOfMe@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Gleeoks appear in specific spots only, and there aren't very many in the game. They're more rare than Hinox. When I first said hello to one, not knowing what its attacks were, I died within seconds. I got stun-locked and murdered. So, if you see a giant, three-headed dragon just standing around, save your game before introducing yourself.

[–] OtakuAltair@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just explore and do shrines, sometimes raid enemy camps, and fuse stuff to your weapons.

Or really just take it at your own pace and don't sweat it; sounds like you're in early game.

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

Took your advice. Raided 2 depths camps secessfully and killed a depths hinox

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you go to the woodlands stable, just a little north of Hyrule Castle, you'll find a Great Fairy who can upgrade your armour. That should help you survive a little longer.

Additionally, there are several ponds, both in the sky and the surface, where you can find regular fairies. Sneak up to them slowly to collect them, and then you have a safety net against instant death.

In the depths, try and gather as many puffshrooms as you can. These explode into a cloud of spores on impact, and enemies within will lose sight of you. Then run behind everyone and sneakstrike them, and that will take out most standard enemies. If need be, it also makes it easier to flee.

Phew, but activating the fairies is rather involved

[–] brunox 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

and now fairies have a fee for upgrading. 😫

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

They did what! As if dragon scales weren't enough hell to deal with

[–] FlagonOfMe@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, but now you don't have to spend rupees to open their buds. The 4th great fairy in BotW was 10,000 rupees to open! Now you pay per upgrade. The first upgrade for each piece is only 10 rupees, then 50, 200, 500. It adds up, for sure, but if you only upgrade a couple of sets to level 4, it's cheaper than it was in BotW. The material costs are more of a chore than the rupee costs.

[–] brunox 1 points 1 year ago

inflation hit hard on Hyrule. 😩

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Its a lot harder than botw's pay up

Where can I get decent early-mid game loot?

There is a large, secret explorable zone accessible via Lookout Landing that has a full set of high defense armor hidden throughout it. I found that set very useful for early and mid game.

Make sure you're always fusing, especially decayed weapons + monster parts, drastically increases durability and damage.

And cook!

Most enemies in camps go to sleep at night (Bokoblins and Moblins, but not Lizals) which gives you the opportunity to sneak into the camp, take their weapons and just leave. No fighting required. You can also steal stuff from a Hinoxes' necklace if you manage to land on his chest without waking him up.

If you're adamant about killing them still, crouch down and sneak up to a still sleeping enemy until a button prompt appears onscreen that reads "sneakstrike". Sneakstrikes deal eight times as much damage as normal hits but still only consume one point of durability, which can make it easy to take out an entire camp without even fighting.

Did you find some elemental items already? Shock fruit, Chuchu Jelly, the like? Use them. You can fuse them to arrows or just toss them at enemies manually, and each has some neat extra effects that deal extra damage, stun your foes, or can even OHKO monsters of the opposing element (fire/frost). Be careful with shock-type items tho because it's easy to get yourself zapped.

I've found horses to be a good way to take out Boss Boko groups. A sprinting horse tramples your enemies which deals damage and can knock them down / make them drop their equipment, and melee weapons deal double damage if the horse is at least cantering. It's also harder for them to hit you while you're on horseback.

Use the environment to your advantage. Rolling or dropping heavy boulders on foes, shoving / luring Bokoblins and Moblins into water to drown them (they can't swim) or tossing them off cliffs might be easier than just fighting them head-on, especially if you're dealing with a group.

... but like others have said already, there is absolutely no shame in avoiding fights altogether until you're better prepared, have better equipment and stronger armor and more skill. There is plenty of other stuff to do, a whole lot of shrines, puzzles, sidequests, minigames and general exploration that doesn't require you to fight anything, but will still make you stronger in the long run.

Something I didn't realize till recently, but there is a game mechanic that doesn't let you get one shotted at full hearts. Keep cheap food and top off every hit. I found that easier to do and build stamina until I could get better weapon fuses, armor, and enough hearts to not get 2 shotted.

Also always try to keep a fairy on you.

Muddle bud is a life saver.

[–] FlagonOfMe@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Muddlebuds are fun, but Puffshrooms are godlike! Especially if you can get an Eightfold Blade. Sneak attack everything.

One of my favorite techniques is to Puffshroom a monster camp in the depths, grab all of the ore and run away, using another Puffshroom on the way out if needed. This lets you get a lot of ore without wearing down your weapons or wasting time fighting the same old Bokoblins and Moblins.

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Muddlebuds are the best item. Let's you clear areas where anything can 1 shot you

You could say the same thing about Puffshrooms, except you're the one who has to do the killing. An enemy can't hit you if they can't see you.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

Yes. They were a lifesaver when I was first exploring the depths. I was able to search and explore further by using them up.

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Why do people like xonanite so much. I find it useless

[–] FlagonOfMe@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

You can trade it for two things: Zonai Charges and Crystalized Charges. Zonai Charges are used in vending machines and to recharge your Energy Cell (personal battery) when you just need a little more juice to fly somewhere. Crystalized Charges are used to *upgrade * your Energy Cell so it lasts longer, but you do find a ton in the Depth in chests.

When using Autobuild, you don't actually need to have the required parts. Autobuild will manufacture the parts you need for 3 Zonaite each. In my opinion, that's the most important use for Zonaite Ore. At one point I had like 600 Zonaite Ore (regular size), and I actually ran out because I was using it so much for Autobuild.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago

I've recently found out how to upgrade my battery so in collecting the ore to trade them in for that.

[–] boredtortoise@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Grab a weapon base from the depths and fuse with enemy loot with whatever good attack power you have available. One handed weapon and a lot of shield use is safe. Keep yourself at max health after getting hit. Defense up with foods or elixirs.

Find a direction where you can manage the enemies. NPCs try to give you a lot of hints

[–] Bicyclejohn@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Are depths weapons better than over world? I have good fuses avalible. Just not prepared for gloom enemies well

[–] boredtortoise@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Weapons that the spirits on the pillars in the depths offer you are not degraded and have additional qualities

[–] rangerzenith@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Honestly making your way to the castle in the sky and heading to the throne room. You can sneak around most enemies up there and get high end gear
