Fixed headline:

Cheeto warns Canada, Mexico that he'll destroy his own economy come Saturday

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 2 points 47 minutes ago

Car prices are going to go crazy lol.

Michigans entire economy is based around getting car parts machined cheaply in Ontario.

He cited the influx of migrants at the southern border, the flow of fentanyl into the United States and the trade deficit the U.S. has with its neighbors.

43 pounds. That's how much fentanyl was seized at the US-Canada border in 2024. 43 pounds. He's going to destroy a $1 trillion trade relationship over 43 pounds. If you voted for this asshole you are an utter moron.

I suggest the counter is to stop respecting Intellectual Property for anything registered in the US, not just US Copyright but also Patents and Trademarks.

The US doesn't actually make much and is hugely dependent on Intellectual Property to extract wealth from other people making stuff.

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 2 points 2 hours ago

Hrm. Maybe I should pull some money out of my US account tomorrow morning. Not sure what, if it happens, would do to the exchange rate

[–] Dead_or_Alive@lemmy.world 7 points 5 hours ago

If Trump does raise tariffs across the board on Canada and Mexico we will have stagflation well within 6 months. There will be nothing the Fed can do to stop it as this is not market driven. There is no way they can even pretend wages can keep up with a sudden artificial 25% price increase.

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 30 points 8 hours ago (5 children)

Canada and Mexico are reportedly at a total loss because they have no idea what Trump even wants. It’s being reported that Trump wants to slap actual tariffs on someone just to show he means business.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 points 21 minutes ago

It's simple.

Trump wants Canada just to surrender and become a US state, which would immediately destroy the Republican party as Canadians (relative to the US anyways) are Marxist leftists.

Obviously Canada tells the US to go fuck an umbrella

Trump wants to invade Mexico "to stop the drugs". This would result in a lotmor US military hanging from bridges, probably not the brightest idea either

In reality though, trump probably doesn't want either. Warning : semi conspiratorial rant following, take it with a grain of salt.

Trump doesn't know what the hell he's doing, he's an absolute idiot. He's just following the directions of project 2025. This all seems to be distractions to keep the US public busy looking at a laser pointer while all the rich buddy buddies are robbing nthe country blind. I'm assuming there is also some pushing from Putin and poohbear somewhere in there to get rid of the one country that can stop them.

I'm guessing nobody has really thought about consequences, nor do they care, they'll be filthy richer so fuck consequences.

[–] thunderstruck@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 hour ago

Trump wants loyalty. Hurting the US with tariffs is the point, not a consequence. Just look at how many people have lined up to support him hoping they'll get a carve-out from his tariffs? He loves that word so much because it causes fear domestically, and that fear drives loyalty.

While it's impossible to know what this shit bag wants, I listened to an interview with some asshole from some conservative think tank and by the end my vibe was this:

America is big and strong. In the past America has played fair to the benefit of everyone. But now America wants to be the biggest and strongest, and everyone else needs to be subservient to the American Masters.

Basically America wants to be a bully by impose tariffs and not having the other countries return the favour. America wants every other country to bend over and take whatever tariffs America wants to impose without consequence

In this perfect world it would allow America to start building up their own companies, forcing consumers to buy American and drive demand for new manufacturing businesses.

Of course this all STILL falls apart with just a few basic questions like "if Canada does not impose counter tariffs (and even if they do) their economy will suffer greatly. Is it important for the USA to have economically healthy allies?" and "Why jack the prices so suddenly without allowing time and investing money in these new business that will be needed?"

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Apparently he wants the US people to pay between 20 and 100% more for pretty much everything? At least that's my take on it.

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

Gotta keep those campaign promises. He was pretty clear that he was going to make inflation worse and raise federal taxes for 99% of us.

[–] ThomasCrappersGhost@feddit.uk 6 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

As a non-USA person, I was under the impression he thinks it will punish foreign companies and bring jobs back to USA??

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

He thinks tariffs are paid by the exporter. I'm not sure if he thinks this is the company exporting goods because I wouldn't be surprised if he thinks its paid by the government of the country the goods came from.

[–] ThomasCrappersGhost@feddit.uk 1 points 1 hour ago

I assume it’s extreme narcissism that’s stopping people telling him how wrong he’s got it?

[–] buzz86us@lemmy.world 27 points 9 hours ago (3 children)

So like how does he do this without screwing over 90% of our automotive companies? I thought he was trying to.... Lower

Prices

[–] bitchkat@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Lower prices comes after the crash when the oligarchs can snatch up assets on the cheap.

[–] BNE@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 7 hours ago

That's the neat thing, he doesn't!

[–] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 12 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Musk said there would be temporary pain. Trump is willing to have others suffer to get what he wants.

[–] buzz86us@lemmy.world 11 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Except his every policy will make prices higher.

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.world 8 points 7 hours ago

Right. Lower prices are what he says he wants, not what he actually wants. Never forget, nearly everything he says is a lie.

I really hope Canada and Mexico do Free Trade Judo, rather than just counter-tariffs.

If Canada imposes a counter-tariff on American goods, it just makes things more expensive for Canadians. But, USMCA required that Canada and Mexico agree that the big tech companies can't be sued in Canada or Mexico for content appearing on their platforms. Fuck that rule, let the lawsuits fly.

The update to NAFTA also required that Canada and Mexico adopt the ridiculously long US copyright term limits, making it life+70 years instead of life+50. So... go back to the original rules and bring a bunch of copyrighted American content into the public domain.

Mexico was required to adopt the "notice and takedown" bullshit from the DMCA. Fuck that. Mexico can go back to their old system. I don't know what they used, but I'm sure it was better for the end-user than DMCA bullshit, and changing it back would only hurt Hollywood.

Instead of just counter-tariffs, make things cheaper and better for Canadian and Mexican citizens. In particular, fuck American copyrights. It's ridiculous that Canada and Mexico were forced to bend over backwards for the benefit of Disney and friends. If the US wants its neighbors to respect its IP, then it needs to respect the free trade agreement that Trump fought for and signed.

[–] chuck@lemmy.ca 11 points 5 hours ago

This is exactly what we need to be looking at, that and patents, DMCA.

I also hope we latch on to EU directives and force companies to have proper GDPR like requests

[–] not_that_guy05@lemmy.world 68 points 15 hours ago (5 children)

Guys I hope people haven't forgotten that the trump admin changed NAFTA when they were in previous term.

We are in this "unfair slump" because they can't even do a deal right.

WTF was it, something something art of the deal or something?

He will tank the US just like he tanked all his businesses.

Trump warns that he's going to tank the US economy On Saturday

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 15 points 11 hours ago

And Canada's and we didn't even get a chance to vote against this guy

[–] Mechanize@feddit.it 153 points 17 hours ago (12 children)

“Look, Mexico and Canada have never been good to us on trade,” he continued. “They’ve treated us very unfairly on trade, and we will be able to make that up very quickly because we don’t need the products that they have.”

Hahahahaha...oh god, comedy heaven!

...Wait, what do you mean this is not the onion?
