The important lesson here is to never use excel sheets for any purpose.

Purpose built software, database gui, SQL or even CSV with data analysis tool will always work better for all purposes.

The fact that you can't stop excel from doing that until you are inside the document means that if you ever import anything into excel it WILL break your numbers into dates and you have to fix them manually. If you are typing a fresh doc you can obviously change the settings but I spent hours working with Microsoft support and they basically gave up saying that they used to have a beta version where you could disable it, but they never added the feature to live excel and they just gave up.

10/10 Microsoft.

you can obviously change the settings

And pray the settings don't change further.

Because they will. I have no idea why or when they do that, but those numbers will always corrupt, there was never an alternative.

Tbf, my Galaxy S22 did this a couple months ago with a system update. All my battery optimization exceptions were reset, so my alarm clock app wasn't allowed to run in the background. Took me a week to figure out why my alarm wasn't going off, because they also changed the location of those settings to an even more obscure menu in app permissions.

How is the S22 holding up? I've got an S23 which I got about a year ago and I have had battery protection on since I got the phone so my battery life is still 100% and I honestly can't see myself needing an upgrade for at least 3 more years.

It's been pretty nice. I started slacking on my charging schedule a few months after I got it, so it's degraded a little bit, but I can still make it through an 8-hour shift with Spotify going through my headset. The only thing motivating me to get something else is the locked down bootloader. I'd like to install something de-google-ified, but it's straight up impossible on the US version of the S22.

I've pretty much given up and just let Google have everything. I know that's an unpopular opinion around here and I totally get it, but I just can't be fucked to try and peel Google outta my life.

Microsoft just does whatever they want and we all have to deal with it. Especially in the corporate space. It's infuriating at times.

If you precede all your data with an ', then excel won't auto convert it total a date. Seems silly to do this for all the data though.

[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh I know. You can do that or just add a single space as well. But you cannot do that before the document is created so if you import something into excel it'll just fuck all your numbers to shit and then you have to spend hours or days unfucking the numbers since even if you tell excel to treat that column as text only it won't put the numbers back correctly.

It's actually impressive how dogshit Microsoft products have become over the years. They clearly knew this was a problem back in 2016 or wherlnever that beta version was floating around where you could just disable the automated date feature entirely beforehand, but I guess they decided they liked pissing off office workers more than giving people meaningful QOL updates over the years.

Wait, so if I were to import a csv with data that would normally be interpreted as a date by excel, but preceded that data with an apostrophe, it would still recognize that as a date? I've never tested this, so I'm not sure.

Relatedly, I know someone who was working some ssn data. Unfortunately, if an SSN started with a 0, it would drop that 0. It was a mess for them. I think there was a recent release that allowed you to not ignore leading 0's.

[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I've never personally tried adding the ' before you import but the one document that was causing problems with that for me recently was an auto generated document so I couldn't have possibly added any spaces or characters before excel went and messed them up anyways.

We should make a parody software called "Microsoft Incel".

[–] vrighter@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

it should run chatgpt on every cell with the prompt 'if you had to interpret the value "$VALUE" as a date, what would be the date?', and then replace each cell's value with the answer.

[–] Sparky@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You monster.

I've got a better idea... What if all mathematical calculations were done by chatgpt

Incel Inside.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Cells.

Incels.

Cells, interlinked.

Excel.

Within cells, interlinked.

Incels.

Fuck me lemmy.

it was better when it was the venn diagram

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I remember seeing a venn diagram with three circles. I think the last was something like "me seeing a fig"

[–] KazuchijouNo@lemy.lol 2 points 2 days ago

This is a venn diagram, you are just prejudiced >:(

Men need to give up the battle. Go full celibate and ignore women. The world is just better.

[–] rbn@sopuli.xyz 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My recommendation would be not to see it as some kind of battle or trying to enforce any kind of relationship. Try to be healthy and active in live. Learn to love yourself. If you love yourself, so will do others. You won't find a partner necessarily but the more you work on your individual life, the higher the chances to find good friends or a partner.

[–] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'd argue against giving false hopes.

Learning to love yourself is good. But people should be aware that there's a good chance they'll never find love in their whole lives. That's a reality some people need to prepare to.

It's not the end of the world. No one wants to live without love but it happens even to the best of people. The best someone can do is just learning how to live by themselves and enjoy that kind of life.

If love eventually comes, good luck, but it's not a guarantee. And if someone has been single for a long time (I mean the better part of their adult life) chances are they will just be single for life, or at least without proper love. And people need to be prepare for that, because it's not easy.

[–] AnarchistArtificer@slrpnk.net 1 points 16 hours ago

The person you're replying to includes friends in the "so too will others [love you]", and I think that may have been a part of their wider point — that putting romantic love on a pedestal is often how we end up blocking ourselves off from love.

I apologise if I have misinterpreted what you are considering when you say "there's a good chance they'll never find love in their whole lives", but this appeared to me like you may not be considering platonic love in making this statement. Being single for life doesn't mean that someone will never find love.

I don't wish to seem like I'm sidestepping the crux of your point though, because I wholly agree that it's difficult to be single in a world that does tend to put romantic love on a pedestal. Even if an individual is able to break themselves out of that toxic mindset, there are many who will make you feel broken for not having, or not wanting a partner. A friend who didn't have family was once in hospital following a severe accident, and she wasn't allowed any visitors, because despite the fact that I was the closest thing to family she had, I was "just a friend". It means that even if you live a life full of love, you will be made to feel like it's not enough, and that sucks.

Can I ask though what that has to do with ignoring women? Do you mean all women altogether or just dating options?
