The paid version is basically enough for everything. Proton is really good and so far never had any data leaks or shit like that... UNLIKE NORD VPN... who put more money in advertising than in security, furthermore they likely sold data...

That sounds reassuring, thanks! I’ll have a go at XDCC with ProtonVPN later.
i have been using their mail for a while. no fuss, straight to the point. swiss cheese engineering ftw. how do u know there isnt any data leaks ?u have any server side knowledge ?
Go visit ipleak.net, if you see your own IP and ISP then there are leaks.
totally makes senses. i hav read somewhere here also about dns leaks. ty for explaining.
Why do you need a VPN for xdcc? You are not sharing anything, and you had no way to know that something like Fast.X.2023.MULTI.2160p.WEB.H265-LOST was pirated content. All the legal letters are pursuing who was sharing something, not just downloading something
Moreover, in order to have both your IP address and what you downloaded, they would have needed to operate the irc server and the irc bot itself, and that would make them much wrong as it's massively sharing copyrighted content + entrapment of regular users who were just lurking and not wanted to infringe any copyright
Are you sure you actually need a VPN for XDCC? In most countries that I know of, downloading pirated content isn't technically illegal. It's the sharing of that content (i.e. torrenting) that often is.
Anyway, the bandwith on ProtonVPN free won't be enough to download at reasonable speeds.
Proton is basically the only service i pay for, and its absolutely worth its money.
