I think it's interesting how Trump cultists have been screaming for months that the DoJ should leave their guy alone, and look into Hunter Biden instead.

Turns out, they have been looking into him, and Hunter's going to enter a guilty plea. Because the DoJ can conduct multiple investigations simultaneously.

Sooo... Trump supporters should be happy now, right? Everyone can shut up about the Trump investigations being witch hunts?

[–] I_Am_Jacks_____@beehaw.org 22 points 1 year ago

I TOTALLY expect that to happen

[–] dhork@beehaw.org 22 points 1 year ago

Its particularly interesting that Hunter got nabbed for evading taxes (technically failing to pay on time, but I suspect he wouldn't have paid at all if the IRS didn't enforce it.)

I bet all those Republicans who voted to gut the recent increase in funding for the IRS will never understand the irony.

God I wish. Talking to my parents about it all like last weekend over fathers day. They call the Biden's the "Biden Crime Family". Claiming Biden got rich from using his influence to be bought out by Ukraine and China. Makes no sense, why would Biden sign the CHIPS Act if he was bought out by China?

So many holes in the conspiracy theory......but they flat out refuse to hear anything else.

[–] 420@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah but hes getting charged with owning guns and dodging taxes, both things that conservatives love!

[–] cassetti@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Oh trust me, they feel vindicated that they knew the truth all along about that slimeball hunter. See they're 100% on top of things.

And I say great - no side is above the law. If you have the evidence show it in court. Huffing and puffing on social media and news outlets is just for show.

The wheels of justice grind slow, but grind fine.

If he committed a crime, then hold him accountable.

[–] ghostalmedia@beehaw.org 37 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He didn’t pay his taxes, he got caught, he paid up and now he’s on probation. Seems like he was held accountable.

[–] cnnrduncan@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

He also illegally possessed a firearm, which Americans are weirdly lax about IMO

[–] Lost_Wanderer@beehaw.org 32 points 1 year ago

Seems standard for the crime, right? At least for "semi" rich people. Didn't pay taxes for two years. Got caught. Paid the taxes and penalties. Plead guilty to that fact. Get probation.

No rich person should get to avoid paying their fair share.

Damn, this completely changes my plans to vote for Hunter Biden.

[–] groupofcrows@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

because of this, i have changed my view of the current hunter biden presidency.

[–] Wilshire@beehaw.org 15 points 1 year ago

Imagine the right-wing foaming at the mouth rage if this was Trump Jr.

[–] jargoggles@kbin.social 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm morbidly curious to see what the right-wing talking points will be about this, because it's going to be an amazing exercise in mental gymnastics.

[–] Jacobp100@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

They’ll still claim trump is being singled out

They're already calling his plea agreement a "sweetheart deal" and "a slap on the wrist".

[–] monkeysuncle@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

I'll be the first to admit that I have no idea if the punishment fits the crime. I'm sure republicans are going to claim favoritism or something like that, and that probation is not enough, but I have no idea how stuff like this usually pays out.

The only frame of reference I have is Wesley Snipes who had 3 misdemeanor tax charges instead of two and got prison time, but Snipes' case was a lot wilder and more money was involved. Snipes didn't plead guilty though and didn't have a plea deal, so it seems reasonable enough to only get probation when you did plead guilty.

Why is there any buzz about this?
Why does every top comment talk about trump when it comes to Hunter?
Why can't people see a person commiting a crime and think "Ok, that shouldn't be done, hope they are caught" and that be it?

[–] mrnotoriousman@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You really don't know why? Maybe because almost the entire GOP and right wing media has been screeching about Hunter's Laptop for literally 3.5 years nonstop?

I'm glad it's done with now, he was never an elected official and it was only news to begin with because they wanted to paint his father as corrupt.

[–] PeanutButterGubGub@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

So then why are people still doing it actively in this thread?

Doing what? Mentioning Trump?

[–] grte@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

because almost the entire GOP and right wing media has been screeching about Hunter’s Laptop for literally 3.5 years nonstop?

It's been the center of conspiracy theories since before Biden was elected, because they don't actually have anything useful to accuse Pres. Biden of and paint their own candidates as the heroes. It's honestly funnier that they found it was tax evasion the whole time, because it's just a generic rich person crime instead of "jewish mole people space laser blueprints"-tier bs.

[–] cassetti@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Strange, the top comment I see is about the punishment fitting the crime and Wesley snipes getting prison time.

I believe most of us do not know all the facts about any case. If you did something wrong you should be punished for it.... and I'm glad he is. I don't care who you are - there's a reason why lady justice is blind, because no man is above the law.

[–] aegisgfx877@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like criminals who paid their debt to society.. its the ones who have not paid their debt that Im upset with

[–] cassetti@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

For sure, if you don't pay taxes, you owe back taxes. If you steel top secret classified documents compromising national security.... I don't know what the debt to society would be in that instance - that's beyond my pay grade to determine.

[–] polygon@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

The reason is because of 5 years of nonstop propaganda from the GOP and tax payer funded expedition into Hunter Biden (the probe began in 2018). And after all that talk, all the lies and misinformation, all of your money they spent in their retaliatory attack on Hunter Biden, they come up with two misdemeanor tax counts and a minor gun charge. Yeah, sure. He did it, he deserves whatever the consequences are for it. But what was uncovered was not worth the amount of time and money, and lets face it, propaganda, the GOP put into it. I promise they spent more money trying to uncover something, anything, Hunter did than the $100,000 he owes the IRS.

So for me it's not so much that Hunter doesn't deserve to be charged, it's the means by which the charges we filed and the extreme amount of wasted time and money and poisoning the well the GOP has done to arrive as such minor charges.

[–] Yewb@kbin.social 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Right? Who gives a shit - break the law do the time, no one should be in the business of identity politics.

[–] PenguinJuice@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Not sure he's going to do any time though is the issue here.

You are right in that if American society was functioning like a normal rational society, we would acknowledge that the president's son did something wrong, and laud that he is being held to account for his wrong actions.

But, and this is just my guess of course, the right wing groups in America are going to see this as vindication for investigating every Biden and ignoring any Trump or Trump family illicit activities. And if there were evidence of other wrong doing by the Bidens, then by all means they should be investigated.

But this will all be used to either redirect attention away from Trump and his various court dates and activities, or be used to rationalize (more than what is already happening) all of it. Either way the end goal would be to fire up the right wing base, and use it as talking points, whataboutism, and redirection from Trump and his family.

Multiple things can be happening and be investigated at once. But the right wing media and voting base don't want to acknowledge that.

The only people creating a misdirection are the people continuously talking about Trump when this topic doesn't have anything to do with trump.
