Do background checks to verify potential employees rely on profiles data brokers have compiled on them? Or do background checks rely on more direct means?

Compliance person here. Background checks are run by a third party who we contract to gather information from authoritative sources like state agencies, governments and credit reference agencies.

No serious company would purchase profile data from a data broker.

Not a HR professional or recruiter (I work in IT), but I know my company uses a third party background checking service for this kind of thing.
