I read there were genetically modified mosquitoes that only bred males. Is that commercially available? What about that laser that zapped roaches, has it been improved to zap mosquitoes too? Maybe there is a guide somewhere on how to build a DIY Anti Mosquitoes Air Defense System?

They suck at flying in a light breeze, so putting a fan on your porch or balcony does help to make it tolerable to sit there.

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago

Seconding this. An oscillating outdoor fan is a fww hundred bucks, and will get rid of all the mosquitos in the area (as well as other flying insects) without doing any ecological harm.

If you have a mosquitoe problem first step is prevention. They breed in standing water and it doesn't have to be deep. Clogged gutters are a common culprit

And old tires laying around.

I live in an area of the country where mosquitoes are a year round nuisance. Think mangroves and tropical weather. Thermacell devices actually work, unlike just about every other device out there.

[-] HeadfullofSoup@kbin.earth 5 points 5 months ago

I've try mostly everything avalaible for mosquito and nothing work.

I might give thermacell a go as the review seem pretty good

Just be careful where you use it. The active chemical is VERY dangerous to aquatic and amphibian life, and can cause serious problems in cats. Dogs don't seem to be impacted though.

Thx for the warning i'm gonna use it in a well ventilatd place with nothing except bird ( that are not that close ) so it's should be okay but i do bring my cat outside sometimes sini keep that in mind

Mosquito nets and DEET. You have few options- physical barrier and chemical deterent.

Some of it depends on your circumstances, honestly. What's applicable and works for me, may not be applicable and work for you in your situation.

One thing that really helps me in my situation is a product called Mosquito Bits. It's a microbial product that you add to anything that might contain standing, stagnant water. It kills mosquito larvae and is quite effective at it. I place this in the saucers of outdoor plants, in equipment that tends to collect water after rain, and even sprinkle it in plants that tend to collect water (ex: bromeliads).

I've also read and heard that using aromatic wood mulch, like cedar, around the outdoor living areas can help somewhat.

The biggest disappointment in terms of products that don't seem to be terrible effective was a Dynatrap. I had acquaintances raving about it, saw some people on other sites like the R-word saying good things about it, so even though they are expensive and require yearly bulb replacements, I gave it a try. It really did not make a dent in the mosquito population, and worse, it traps so many other kinds of insects including beneficial insects that I consider it to be a failure. I've opened up the trap to empty it, and there just aren't many mosquitos in there, just lots of moths, flies, beetles, etc.

Rosemary and lavender are just two plants that mosquitoes don't like. Fight them multiple ways. Plants, remove standing water, a fan, repellent you put on, ect.

I have a Dynatrap XL set up in the back corner of my back yard. It's electric, so you plug it in and run it all season 24/7. Collects them in a cage where they eventually die. You need to empty the trap a few times per season which is gross and I hate doing it, but the trap is super effective. Allowed us to enjoy our back yard the whole season. Even during twilight when the bugs are normally at their worst.

[-] preppietechie@midwest.social 4 points 5 months ago

Does it trap other bugs? I want to get rid of mosquitoes, but donโ€™t want to mess with any others.

[-] RacerX@lemm.ee 3 points 5 months ago

I believe we found some moths in there as well. Notably I don't recall seeing bees in there.

[-] Nemo@midwest.social 5 points 5 months ago

Repel? Anything that makes smoke or moves air around.

[-] KillerTofu@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

We put some homemade ovitraps on our property and it cut the mosquitoes down noticeably.

Mosquito magnet is capable of wiping the entire population on your area, but it's quite expensive and doesn't take effect immediately.

[-] Paragone@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

there's a machine which takes a 20lb propane cyl, & attracts 'em by flashing-lights & CO2, & it captures only mosquitos, unlike bug-zappers, and it can harvest a stunning amount of the things.

You need to replace the hormone attractant .. capsule, or whatever it should be called, monthly ( that is where they get their recurring-money from, and it does make a big difference ).

Be selective in your culling of the local insect-population, as the entire ecology around you gets altered by the action, eh?

[-] lordkuri@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Mosquito magnet. I have one, they work very well.

[-] Hugh_Jeggs@lemm.ee 2 points 5 months ago

Pours CO2 into the atmosphere for his own comfort

Doesn't see the irony of lecturing people about harming their immediate ecology
