An Xbox player was given a year-long ban for recording nude scenes in Baldur's Gate 3.

Any clips you record on your Xbox are uploaded to Microsoft's servers by default and may be automatically flagged as explicit content, as /u/Daddy-Vegas on Reddit found out when he automatically received a combined 390 day (4+21+365) suspension from Xbox Live for three clips he recorded.

His first appeal was apparently rejected, but subsequent appeals led to his ban being lifted after the gaming press picked up the story.

That’s dumb as shit, why does Microsoft even allow mature games on their platform if their platform doesn’t allow mature content. Sure, record blood and guts, but dont show a nipple or a penis unless it’s exploding in a shower of gore!!!! What a fucking disgusting standard we have that gore and violence are celebrated but anything sexual, even simple nudity is some kind of felony offense.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 126 points 10 months ago (11 children)

Still gets me that in GTA:San Andreas they had hours and hours of non-stop killing and gore - but it was a a low-poly blurred sex scene that was only available if you manually cracked the game files that made it go down in infamy.

Hillary Clinton literally promoted a fucking dumb fucking law in response to the Hot Coffee mod, along with "blue dog democrat" (read: Not So Secret Republican) Joe Lieberman. Thankfully the bill failed.

Leiberman literally used his votes to stand in the way of progress. He's literally why we don't have a Public Option for the ACA, which is the only thing that would have made the ACA actually worthwhile.

People to this day still lose their shit over the 2016 election and don't understand why people hated Hillary Clinton and blamed it all on a "right wing propaganda machine."

I guess they entirely forgot the absolutely fuck stupid shit she did in congress, like this.

This kind of shit showed her to be not only out of touch, but completely misunderstanding how unused code on a gaming console was such an unlikely thing to be leaked to kids to begin with. In her own dumbshit words, Hot Coffee was a "nothingburger."

Sorry for the derail, I just always kind of feel like people forgot about this entirely.

"People to this day still lose their shit over the 2016 election and don't understand why people hated Hillary Clinton and blamed it all on a "right wing propaganda machine.""

I voted for Hillary in the general because fucking obviously. But she was such an arrogant shit-head through the whole election. I remember watching her boastfully declare that she wouldn't listen to Bernie supporters because she didn't need their vote. She's like the anti-Biden. That's when I started to be worried that she would let Trump win. Fuck her. She's out of touch and thinks it's a virtue.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 33 points 10 months ago

Exactly. Wasn't about to vote for a dipshit like Trump, but she was being downright abusive to Democratic voters.

She promoted Trump with her "pied piper" strategy because she was so sure he would be the easiest to beat in the general election.

Then she won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College in a bunch of states she didn't campaign in and people on her campaign (including her own husband) had argued she needed to go do stump speeches in those states.

She absolutely thought it was "her turn" and that the DNC owed her for essentially bailing them out when they were broke.

In court, the DNC didn't even argue that they didn't put their finger on the scale for Clinton, they argued it was legal for them to do that because the DNC is a private club, which means they make their own rules, and if they break their own rules, the only people they have to answer to is themselves.

Later in the hearing, attorneys representing the DNC claim that the Democratic National Committee would be well within their rights to “go into back rooms like they used to and smoke cigars and pick the candidate that way.”

What's that old saying about if the facts aren't on your side, argue the law, if the law isn't on your side, argue the facts, and if neither is on your side pound the table and yell?

The DNC never tried to make the argument that they didn't put their finger on the scale for Hillary Clinton because they would have been found to have definitely done so during discovery proceedings.

The facts weren't on their side so they argued the law, which is that "We're a private club, so NYEAH. Go fuck yourself."

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The DNC let trump win. They'd rather lose and hand the country over to a psychopathic narcissist, with 7 bankruptcies, 26 open sexual assault cases against him, a history of fraud, and a recorded declaration of his sexual assault, than win with Bernie. Democrats really need to reflect on the reality of that scenario. The Democratic National Convention would rather have a deranged republican in office than a Democrat with a few socialist ideas. That says a lot about what their real agenda is. All the hot button topics they drone on about are distractions.

[–] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I voted for Bernie. The DNC absolutely supported Hillary in the same way that they almost always support incumbents.

Having said that, the polls were favorable to Bernie. There are a lot of moderate and conservative Democrats, and they absolutely come out to vote.

Bernie lost the primary and would have lost to Trump in the general the moment Trump ramped up the socialist messaging. And unlike some others like Elizabeth Warren, Bernie does not hide from the socialist label. He embraces it, for better or worse.

It doesn't make me feel better about Hillary. But that's who Democrats chose.

[–] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (2 children)

Democrats are so terrified of being labeled socialist, they refuse to consider the fact that most Americans support socialist democratic policies in all but name.

Bernie lost the primary thanks to DNC antagonism, but he would have destroyed Trump. He was the only one who could have. His election events dwarfed Hillary's, rivaled Trump's, and kept growing. Donny was so terrified of Bernie that he refused to engage with, and barely ever mentioned him.

No, I don't think I will.

[–] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yeah they’re real hypocritical dick heads

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Being hypocrites is on purpose. It's an expression of power that they can get away with being a hypocrite.

Deep down, it's because they want you to know that their plan is for a world where the law protects them but does not bind them, and anyone who isn't "Christian" enough the law will bind but not protect.

They want you to know that they have power over you because their own hypocrisy don't matter to them.

[–] carl_dungeon@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

That’s an interesting perspective I hadn’t thought of before, and I think you’re right.

[–] SoleInvictus@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

I really wish they weren't, but I also agree with them.

console ownership looks like a worse option everyday. Fuck microsoft also

[–] halfwaythere@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

You don't really own a console. Just look what happened to Sony owners and the content they paid hard earned money for on their consoles. Microsoft and Nintendo are not outliers here. The PCMR "weirdness" the guy above was complaining about is also not walled off from this bullshit. Thanks to Microsoft.

However PCs have a solid chance with gaming becoming more and more embraced by the Linux community.

Lol, Microsoft absolutely did not need to spend time making this 'feature' and now they get a bunch of bad press for its existence

[–] CaptainSpaceman@lemmy.world 48 points 10 months ago

The great porn firewall is coming if the religious get their way. All these companies are getting ahead of it JIC.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 49 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (9 children)

Company with market cap of $2.75 trillion can't even plan a fucking feature properly and then blames the gamers for their own fucking stupidity.

Also, I'll honestly be shocked if MS views this as "bad press" since it was only a few years ago that they ignored all the bad press when it come to banning Minecraft players for things they said in their own private servers.

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2022/06/microsoft-will-start-banning-players-from-all-private-minecraft-servers/

That still happens, the bad press stopped happening, but people still lose access to Minecraft for what they do in private worlds that are "friends only."

I think people wanting to say horrible stuff on their own server is disgusting, but what's more disgusting is the weird Microsoft Nanny State that says you can be banned permanently for that..

I expect Microsoft to stand firm that they don't give a shit about bad press.

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 13 points 10 months ago

To this day I wish Mojang didn't get bought out by Microsoft

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago

They don't give a shit. They're a $2.75 trillion dollar company. People will keep paying them, and they don't have to change anything. These types of issues are nothing to Microsoft. They couldn't care less.

[–] Aatube@kbin.social 8 points 10 months ago

From what I’ve seen, there’s an easy-to-use fanmade way to turn it off, and those smart enough to run a server have it off.

[–] kick_out_the_jams@kbin.social 4 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

The chat reporting help page also lays out that reports must be initiated by a player and will be reviewed by the moderation, which should hopefully limit the false-report problems sometimes associated with more automated moderation systems.

If that happens I guess your 'friend' reported you.

I guess if he disabled auto upload captures to Xbox live he wouldn’t have been banned. Microsoft wouldn’t dare ban players for captures they only keep locally.

Still this is a huge fuckup from Microsoft, I hope they reverse this.

[–] smeg@feddit.uk 34 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Banned from what exactly? Just banned from uploading videos? Banned from all xbox live stuff? Banned from using the console full stop?

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 46 points 10 months ago (1 children)

From the post:

as of now; I can't play any game that requires a network connection (Basically making all the money I put into MW3 over the last 6 months even more worthless)

[–] smeg@feddit.uk 18 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Huh, I didn't see that in the article (maybe my anti-adblock-blocker cut it out), thanks!

That's really shit, another warning against the walled garden of console gaming I guess.

[–] Stovetop@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (2 children)

A warning against any dependence on software you don't "own", basically. Being VAC banned, which has also been known to happen to people by mistake, is also a way to cut people off from their purchases which are predominantly online.

So the majority of PC players who use Steam are just as likely to fall into the same situation as the person in the article on Xbox if they're not careful, too.

[–] wildginger@lemmy.myserv.one 5 points 10 months ago

And specifically, something to be mindful of for games with server reliance. VAC bans happen on games with valve servers, so any multiplayer game puts you at the mercy of these systems.

I got banned for using the looking for group tool to find help for a boss in elden ring last year. I think the post title was "astel, star friend".

Considering how offensive this was, in retrospect it's amazing that the ban only lasted a few hours (/s)

[–] PlasterAnalyst@kbin.social 6 points 10 months ago

Although I didn't get a ban I did have a screenshot removed that I took in gtaV off of the rockstar website. I ran into a completely naked man in the hills with his junk hanging out and took a picture in game.

[–] IvanOverdrive@lemm.ee 6 points 10 months ago

Huh. I wonder what will happen if you do the same on PC.
