Movie trailers ARE the advertisements
sigh there are times when lemmy get too extreme even for me .
I mean, that's not an extreme definition of advertisement. Trailers ARE movie ads. That was their original intent and ONLY purpose.
If you don't realize that, then you really do deserve those downvotes.
But he is also right that Lemmy gets too extreme.
I don't mind if ads were for things I'm actually interested in. An ad for the new Deadpool movie? I might have not known it was coming out. An ad for a new esp32 microcontroller? Also nice.
What the user is asking for is exactly how ads should be. Let me go somewhere when I'm looking for ads and show me ads.
Don't show me ads when I'm not looking for them.
true, let people search for ads that they want
Piping in with some odd history info. They were originally made to give theater patrons something to watch while the main film was re-wound. Theaters used to play the same movie on repeat all day until they got a new film, then it was that movie all day. There were no "move times". If you showed up midway you just stayed until it repeated so you could catch the beginning. Also why news reels and other visual media would get played.
Psycho made the change to set times. Hitchcock did not want anyone to accidentally see the end without starting from the beginning. Shortly after that those movie trailers got bastardized into the ads we now know them as.
But some people like them? The anticipation is part of the experience for them.
I am not that kind of person but why not let them have their fun?
Oh no, by all means. I channel surf trailers when I'm bored. But we should at least acknowledge what they are: ads.
I have no idea what everybody seems to have against your will to see movie trailers.
i mean he's literally not wrong. they're heavily used as advertisements and their role is as promotional material.
