Hiked a bit today. Went from 735 meters to 906 and back without big up/dows on the way. I expect elevation gain will be a bit more than 170 meters, may be 200. But SHealth says 744. This looks way off.

My main whatsapp usecase is check and response notification. After installing full whatsapp on my watch this usecase requires more taps:

  1. notification itself does not show photos any more
  2. to see the photo or to reply even with a predefined "ok", one need firt tap "open watch app", wait a bit, click on the keyboard and only there one can answer.

So, take an look and answer is not possible anymore.

Do I miss something?

The stable OTA is currently live in the United States for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro series. The Galaxy Watch 4 will soon be able to download outside the United States including India, UK, EU (Europe), Australia, and Canada in the next few weeks.

GW6 with WearOS4 out of the box will be released in a week.

If samsung would release stable WearOs4 for GW4/5 same time, it will make no sense to release new beta just a week before.

This makes me thinking that stable WearOS for GW44/5 will come noticeably later.

I hope, I'm wrong here :)

I complained that in the history view Samsung health only showed sleep time. This parameter only proves that you keep time schedule, but not sleep quality.

Now Samsung added sleep score history view as well. A step forward. Looking forward when they will add history for "actual sleep time" as well.

The main problem with the sleep scope - if does not look like a reliable metrics of the sleep quality.

playing with different bands I learned that "quick release" mechanism is very different from one band to another. Sometimes it is really easy to swap bands, sometimes not.

On the new leaked images one can see a release button on GW6, some garmin watches use similar approach.

This is Interesting!

There are 9 more days till announcement event - where we will learn more.

Browsing new samsung health (6.24.1.031) on my phone and found that now you can create your own exercises. Which can be a generic one or a GPS based one.

So far a custom exersise cannot be transfered to s watch. I believe this comes with obeui 5 (for watches) soon.

Another strange limitation: for custom exersises I cannot set duration target less than 5 minutes. Why?

Google weather is the only weather app I found that provides you max UV index fro the day. But the only place where you can see it is the UV tile.

On the other hand, it does not provide you moon phase data

Juts installed new samsung health (6.24.1.031) on my phone. Two things I notices:

  1. Badges are redesigned and all previous badges are deprecated. Probably samsung will introduce dynamic badges?
  2. It looks like that for new badges it considers data since July only. I have days with 20000 steps for sure.
  3. After the update samsung health told me that last cloud sync was done on 01 Jan 1970. What is not true. To be on the safe side I triggered "sync now".

If samsung will introduce dynamic badges (like garmin) - it will be cool (global challenges become boring after a year or so). But if not.... it will be a step down.

Some data for people who wants to know how long galaxy watch can track hiking.

I did a 8 hours hike with my GW4 44mm and tracked it with SHealth. Settings: AOD Off, raise to wake on, BT on, received some notifications, No music. As you can see: in 8 hours of hiking the watch went from 98% of battery to 16%.

This a rather good result considering permanent GPS, HR and so on tracking.

GW last long enough to track a "regular" hiking. But you should better have your watch fully charged when you start.

GW5 and GW6 should have even better results.

Turing off BT and raise to wake could save some battery.

disclaimer : I posted similar post earlier on reddit (when I used it), but I think that this info can be interested for you as well.

Some time ago (when I was a rather active on Reddit 😁) I wrote a post about my GW4 refresh.

After few months of using it, I have to admit that this probably did not worth it.

  • Yes, bezel is not that big visually (GW6 should solve this out of the box I hope)
  • Yes I have a refreshed look

But:

  • it is a bit less comfortable to use digital bezel
  • it is a bit harder to clean the watch

So, I will not mod my next watch this way.

PocketCast wearos app is released, description/announcement is "attached". Pocket Casts Plus subscription is needed.

If you like hiking, you should know that there is no a good wearos app for hiking (so far, I hope). Recently wikiloc has announced that their wearos app which supports map view - this was promising.

I tried wikiloc for hiking on my gw4 - the results are mixed:

Good things:

  • map works
  • some extra data like elevation, remain elevation etc is show

Bad things:

Everything else: No turn by turn navigation instructions, neither on the watch no on the app. No elevation profile on phone app, no automatic route adjustment, no route planer, no… basically no nothing. All this is more about phone app than the watch app, but still.
