Four men climb on stage during Elvis Presley's show in Las Vegas, supposedly to shake his hand. Fearing for his life, Elvis and bassist Jerry Scheff immobilize the men using karate moves. No charges are filed, but later Elvis tells the audience, "I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen. I'm sorry I didn't break his goddamned neck, is what I'm sorry about." After the attack, Elvis becomes convinced that his former karate instructor Mike Stone, the man now sleeping with his ex, Priscilla, is trying to have him killed.

The Beach Boys begin recording sessions for Brian Wilson's masterpiece, "Good Vibrations". Multiple layered overdubs spread out over eleven sessions would make this the most expensive single ever recorded to date. Although the record would top charts around the world and sell millions of copies, it would be The Beach Boys' last to reach the Billboard Top 10 for ten years.

Doing a week-long stint as guest host of the Mike Douglas Show, John Lennon performs "Memphis" and "Johnny B. Goode" with Chuck Berry, whom Lennon refers to as "my hero."

John and Cynthia Lennon, along with George and Patti Harrison, fly to India to study meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Paul and Ringo would join them a few days later, but Starr would become bored and leave on March 1st. Much of the Beatles' "White Album" was written during their stay.

Columbia Records releases "Bits And Pieces" by The Dave Clark Five in the UK, where it will rise to #2. Some of the song's unique percussion was supplied by band members stomping on an exercise board, not always perfectly in time to the music.

Against the advice of Columbia Records executives, Johnny Cash visits Folsom State Prison in California to record a live album. The resulting LP, "Live At Folsom Prison" would become one of Johnny's biggest selling records, reaching #1 on the Country album chart and #13 on the Hot 200. It also produced one of his most memorable hit singles, "Folsom Prison Blues". In 2003, "Live At Folsom Prison" was certified Triple Platinum by the RIAA for sales of over three million and was ranked #88 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time

The Rolling Stones tape a performance for The Ed Sullivan Show, which will be shown the following night. The band played "Satisfaction", "As Tears Go By" and "19th Nervous Breakdown".

The club has been the host for musicians and bands including Taj Mahal, Otis Redding, Hugh Masekela, Alice Cooper (who all recorded live albums there between 1966 and 1969), The Doors, The Byrds, Three Dog Night, The Mothers of Invention, Buffalo Springfield, Led Zeppelin, Love, The Stooges, Parliament-Funkadelic, The Beach Boys, Cheap Trick, No Doubt, System of a Down, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Chicago, Germs, Elton John, Oasis, Steppenwolf, Van Halen, Rush, Johnny Rivers, X, Iron Butterfly, Shark Island, Fleetwood Mac, KISS, Guns N' Roses, Death, AC/DC, Golden Earring, Linkin Park, Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Stryper, Dokken, and Phil Seymour.

The Beatles and George Martin added the orchestral crescendos to "A Day In The Life", using a 40-piece orchestra. Martin would later recall that when he told some of Britain's finest musicians that they were to play twenty-four bars of cacophonous, improvised crescendo, "They all looked at me as though I were completely mad."

A Birmingham, England band called UB40 play their first ever gig at a pub in their hometown. The Reggae group took their name from the UK unemployment benefit form. Between 1980 and 2005 they would place 39 songs on the UK Top 40 chart.

The surviving members of The Who reunite for their 25th anniversary at the televised British Phonographic Industry Awards in London. Their three song medley of "My Generation / Substitute / Who Are You" runs past their time slot, forcing Rick Astley to accept his award for Best British Single, off the air.

Little Richard records "Long Tall Sally" and J&M Studios in New Orleans. The song will go on be his highest charting record in the US, climbing to #6 on Billboard's Pop chart and #1 on the R&B chart by next April. Rolling Stone magazine has listed the tune as #56 on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time
