It's nothing exclusive to open source. Eve Online removing boot.ini and bricking Windows installs was hilarious.

 

One financial lesson they should teach in school is that most of the things we buy have to be paid for twice. There’s the first price, usually paid in dollars, just to gain possession of the desired thing, whatever it is: a book, a budgeting app, a unicycle, a bundle of kale. But then, in order to make use of the thing, you must also pay a second price. This is the effort and initiative required to gain its benefits, and it can be much higher than the first price.

Aside from torrent the other p2p where an open port can be important is Soulseek, you could be blacklisted by users from downloading pretty quickly if you don't/can't share music.

I switched to mullvad a few months back and what I noticed coming from AirVPN is how much less captcha requests I get, I'm not much into p2p so I'll probably stay with them.
