I suspect they do, in fact, understand the difference. And are intentionally conflating lemmy the platform with lemmy.ml the instance in order to dissuade people from using the platform, since they know that most people new to the platform wouldn't understand the distinction.

Sounds like a recurring theme based on the AMA. It's almost as if Reddit is being disingenuous when they keep talking about how eager they are to work with 3rd-party devs.
Humans are paradoxically really good at adaptation, and also not admitting mistakes. Dude is singularly responsible for the biggest PR fumble in Reddit history and seemingly has zero self awareness despite being at the center of it.
