I used to run an old Dell R610. Used a decent amount of power.
Switched to an old 4th gen quadcore i7 laptop.
Been running great, uses less power, has a built in display and keyboard.
Linux base, Docker Env for most everything else.
Holy shit that's sleek. Gonna give that a go for a while.

If they have issues with your hobbies they're not worth it. Who cares what you're into, if it doesn't negatively affect things, who the hell cares. My wife and I regularly game right next to each other and we're well past the "normal" age for gamers.
