that would quickly fill up the storages of the instances i think. since most of them, as far as i understand it, are fundet by donations that won't be the case anytime soon.

I'm kinda okay with that. I remember the before times when Reddit didn't have one either. Some subs went from high quality art to annoying video loop content a few years after reddit videos premiered. Made it a hassle to find anything from the top of all time once tons of users joined and started mass upvoting the video loop content, which dethroned the top of all time posts often. :/
Stuff that had stayed at the top for years suddenly got dumped and impossible to find.
I don't think lemmy does video yet. Only text and images.
So yeah almost all of the videos you see would be external links.
