Generally not a fan of the sprint weekend format, but this one was pretty enjoyable (probably mainly due to the weather)

[–] NewNewAccount@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Making Saturday a self-contained event makes it more enjoyable imo.

[–] Coelacanth@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I like that the sprint doesn't affect the race, but I hate that the slow buildup of the race weekend is disrupted. I just can't get into quali on a Friday.

[–] scrawdaddy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I love it. I never really cared about p1-3. I’d check the standings but that’s it. I’ve watched three sessions so far this weekend.

[–] spec@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Agreed, doesn't have implications on Sunday and teams seem to let their drivers actually race.

[–] Swarfega@lemm.ee 8 points 1 year ago

Wet weather always makes F1 more entertaining!

[–] Cabeza2000@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Definitely one of the best sprint races since the format started.

[–] kiddblur@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There really is nothing like a race in the wet.

[–] zav@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago

Best 24 laps thus year

[–] jackofalltrades@lemmy.world 22 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Great mini race mainly because of the weather. Nice call by Russell there, baking fearless to gamble. Also, Max is on a completely different league atm.

[–] CataclysmZA@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

The undercut for the slicks was really well timed, good call from Mercedes to trust George's feel out on track.

[–] riotrick@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I thought it was a pretty big gamble at the time. But it turned out well for him.

If you told me a race with max winning by 20 seconds was action pacted I would have insulted your pet, gestured at your mother and called you a liar.

[–] Meloku 4 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I wonder how much of that gap was Hulkenberg stopping Perez and Sainz...

[–] Luvs2Spuj@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

True. But also, the fact that Perez was stopped by a Haas...

[–] Stylus_XL@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Max pulled a massive lead in Suzuka last year as well - he's generally excellent in wet conditions. It's the attribute that had RB fighting over his signature at 16 y/o.

[–] The_one_and_only@feddit.nl 1 points 1 year ago

That would have extended the gap for sure, but the biggest part of the gap was built up after Perez overtook Hulk.

[–] Determinator@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago (3 children)

21 second lead in a 24 lap race. Another masterclass from Max.

Glad to see a better performance from Checo as well, minus the drama between the two Red Bull cars on that first lap.

[–] virtualras@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Honestly Max feels like he’s on another level even compared to other β€œon another level” years from other drivers. Like, the consistency from Quali to race, event after event, is insane. A season to remember.

And I hate it like cmon max can you chill with the throttle I wanna see some racing at the front why you driving away bb?

[–] DarkMatter_contract@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And is not like both of their car pull out the same lead, so it is not just the car.

[–] virtualras@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Exactly, I was talking to a buddy today and they were asking β€œwhy is Checo so slow in the Red Bull?” Bruh he ain’t slow (he’s had his rough moments but he ain’t slow), Max is just out of his mind on speed

[–] Determinator@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yea Max is basically the result of an experiment to see what happens if you literally breed racing into a kid and train them from birth. He's a machine, and not just the pace itself but the damn consistency.

[–] o_oli@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah first lap was some bullshit from Checo, really dodgy forcing max onto the grass there.

On inters when the slicks were much faster in the final 8-10 laps.

[–] Calania@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Amazing performance from Hulk and for once, good strategy from haas. One more lap and he might have overtaken Stroll and Alonso aswell.

[–] egonallanon@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Hulk has been really impressing me with his qualy performance this season. Kind of a shame he's being wasted in a hass.

[–] masires@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm with Red Bull through and through, but MV finishing 20s+ seconds ahead of the 2nd is not what I want to tune in every Sunday for. Let's hope Aston Martin can make a title contending car soon!

Funny because the same duplication thing happened to you hahaha I think Lemmys getting a bit overloaded today

[–] timespace@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Lol that’s awesome

[–] Meloku 1 points 1 year ago

Probably due to third party Reddit apps shutting off yesterday

[–] GandalfTheWhite@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Why did the teams switch to slicks. Making up more than the pitstopgap in 6 laps has to a very unreasonable gamble

[–] scrawdaddy@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It worked for Russel though! No chance at points otherwise imo

But he could profit from the other guys also switching. I wonder if everyone else stayed on inters if he would finish in the points.

[–] rumckle@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

For people out of the points the gamble might have helped. Definitely worked for George.

For Hulk, I think he put too much into his tires at the start, he probably would have finished out of the 8 if he stayed on the inters.

[–] zav@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

My thoughts aswell but atleast it makes for more excitment for us

[–] Meloku 4 points 1 year ago

If you were out of the points, the gamble was worthy.

Hoping for rain tomorrow lol

[–] macaronidildo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I will be doing my best rain dance tonight

[–] qimdbxfk6@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

This sprint was fun because of the weather, I think.

The first lap incident made Max push the car 🀣 🀣 🀣

[–] zav@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Even tho this was a sprint, best race this season so far

[–] sib@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Great race, hoping for more of the same tomorrow

[–] dmtalon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Ugh... Browsing all bites me with spoilers...

[–] Bison1911@vlemmy.net 1 points 1 year ago

Albon got screwed on strategy. Feels bad
