I'm from Malaysia, and this is very rare.
It's called Tetraphobia and it's common throughout Asia due to the words for "4" and "death" having similar pronunciations in many Asian languages. In the west, triskaidekaphobia, fear of the number 13, is more common but the exact origin is unknown.
