Ok, I don't mean this is as specific criticism of OP, this is a general gripe.....

but come on y'all. this is science memes and nobody bothered to link to the actual press release from the organization?

https://schmidtocean.org/thriving-antarctic-ecosystems-found-in-wake-of-recently-detached-iceberg/

Stop lazily sharing images of cool sea creatures without bothering to share the source of them, especially since this particular organization livestreams their ENTIRE dives on youtube, they have HUNDREDS of 5+ hour or so long recordings of their ROV dives all publicly accessible.

https://www.youtube.com/@SchmidtOcean/streams

It is really starting to piss me off that people will share an occasional meme-ified finding/photo from this ROV/organization and be like "wow so cool" and no one bothers to share the youtube of the organization that is literally livestreaming HD definition video of them DOING THESE DIVES. This extends from people who show me memes made from images from these ROV dives all the way up to supposedly professional news organizations lazily writing an article on something this organization found and not linking to the public video archive, stream and source of the content. Seriously, am I crazy? Why isn't the fact that anybody can watch these dives and see all the cool sea creatures being discovered by scientists for themselves repeated in every article by a news organization about something the ROV discovered? They are amazing and the camera on the Subastion ROV is insanely good, the footage is gorgeous.

I am mad because this is super fucking cool and people would rather just clip a picture or too and be like "ooooh deep sea" while not linking to one of the only organizations on earth and one of the only ROVs on earth, doing these dives regularly and sharing the info... while the deep sea is about to be strip mined by deep sea mining companies before we even understand it.

Please do better y'all, share and watch the fuck out of the deep sea, but I challenge you to stop being superficial about it.

The horror of the deeps meme is a funny one I guess, but it is boring, it is boring to call the deep sea "alien", it is no more alien than we are. What is alien is our sense of disassociation from these places that are as much a part of earth as anywhere else on this dying planet...

Science is under such incredible threat, as are ecosystems especially ocean ones, show this shit to your kid, watch it yourself, this is incredible stuff and it makes awesome background TV!

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/iceberg-breaks-off-antarctica-revealing-104553716.html

to save you a click, they found an ecosystem where they didn't really expect to see one but it's not a great big novelty, just the normal sort of "never seen that species before" kind of novelty that comes with nearly every trip below the waves.

it's very funny how this kind of thing constantly repeats, and then you look at the horror and it's utterly mundane and kinda pathetic

elephants aren't afraid of mice, but humans are apparently so desperate for horror that we'll be spooked by jellyfish

[–] Justas@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The elephants are afraid of stomping the little creatures to death, actually.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So it's not fear, it's empathy?

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

That's a cool fact. Thanks.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

I am spooked by jellyfish entirely without horror.

[–] flora_explora@beehaw.org 6 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I was wondering what about a tentacled animal would be so exciting, given that there are so many other tentacled animals out there already...
