Seriously, what the hell is a model m?

Is it just the keyboard?

[-] Ropianos@feddit.de 28 points 1 year ago

The only thing I could find is an old-school keyboard by IBM. I guess that's it and OP just likes the hacker vibes of using that kind of keyboard?

Ah. I don't think I'll ever know that particular pleasure. I won't be able to go back after switching to a preonic/Dvorak.

[-] almost1337@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

You can order their custom keyboard with US Dvorak layout.

[-] transientpunk@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

That wouldn't help the ortholinear issue though.

Pretty sure 2S3XY4U are gonna have to come first. Maybe then I and M.

I would definitely troubleshoot in a better mood while on a Tesla lmao

A model of keyboard that has been in continuous production since 1985 through to this day. They are well liked for their modern layout, long lifespan (ones made in 1985 still going strong to this day), and high quality clicky mechanism (blows cherry blues out of the water imho).

FWIW, if you don’t have to work in the same room with others, and you write a lot of code or prose, it is a really great typing experience.

Here’s the modernized approximation reviewed: https://www.theverge.com/22369731/unicomp-mechanical-keyboard-new-model-m-review-price

I have the Mac layout version for my work computer and I love it. The people on my conference calls, not so much.

Weapon X prototype?

Clickity-clackity hackerman noises.

I like that every keyboard was signed on the inside by some quality control guy. And that they had some holes in the baseplate which the manual explicitly stated were there so the coffee could run off. Yet, my favorite keyboard is the Cherry G80-3000 (US ANSI).

[-] TheInsane42@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I miss mine. Still have 10 laying around, just no reliable converters to use them on usb only hardware. (DasKeyboard boards are an acdeptable alternative though)

I wore down 1 spacebar cap in 10 y, but no issues what so ever apart from the wear on that 1 cap. (But I have a complete set spare caps as well ;) )

[-] almost1337@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Unicomp makes passable USB buckling spring keyboards. Not quite as rugged as the solid metal plate backed OGs, but a joy to type on.

[-] Mandarbmax@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

If you have like $25 you can cook up your own converter with a promicro and a connector. Look up "soarer's converter" on deskthority.

If you have any trouble with that hit me up here or on discord (Mandarbmax) and I'll help you out or if you really can't do it I can cook you up a converter myself and mail it to you.

[-] DosDude@retrolemmy.com 1 points 1 year ago

God. I wish I had one. If only for my retro IBM PCs

[-] FQQD@feddit.de 7 points 1 year ago

bruh i thought "since when was there a tesla model m" for a sec

[-] JoMomma@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago

Model M, as in the keyboard? Do... do you have an audio sampling of your Model M, my dream keyboard?

[-] Mandarbmax@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Here is my beloved Unicomp made model M https://youtu.be/wrmdYUcjSm4?si=LNGGQaz-01kcejS6 If you want a model M and no headache then getting a unicomp new model M is the way to go. If you want something vintage though let me know where you are located and I'll ask around and see if I can get you a good deal.

Model Ms are if anything in too great a supply so I'm always happy to help get one to a loving home.

That sounds amazing! Almost indistinguishable from the original (which I suppose is the point of the Unicomp Model M haha). I really appreciate that, maderbmax!

[-] Mandarbmax@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Glad you enjoyed the video! The unicomps really are extremely similar to the model Ms of 1985. It is funny how there has been less change to this model of board through 4 decades and 3 companies making them than there was in the prior 10 years of IBM's keyboards!

I guess by 1985 they found pretty much the perfect design for a keyboard lol

[-] 01189998819991197253@infosec.pub 2 points 11 months ago

I read somewhere that IBM ran a study with typists, who helped design the revolutionary new keyboard, we know as Model M. The typists dubbed it as the most comfortable keyboard, and, as such, IBM didn't make any changes to it.

[-] Anticorp@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

That sounds so good! It's just one guy typing, but it sounds like an entire newsroom.

[-] Gork@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Just as our Goddesses intended.

[-] Mandarbmax@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Thank you! I put some work into that board to make it sound a bit nicer than normal (greasing the barrels with benalene) and I'm proud of the results

[-] Oha@lemmy.ohaa.xyz 3 points 1 year ago

That sounds like my childhood, and I'm diggin it. Thank you! I love it!

[-] art@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

sudo apt install bucklespring

[-] bi_tux@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Dreamcast kb iz way better imo

[-] mvirts@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

These days I think I'm more excited to use my computer when it's broken 😹

[-] gabrielhidasy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Meh, the model M is a poor replacement for the model F.
