Never had a high-seas site autoplaying. Just saying.

uBlock Origin takes care of that.

If pirating tv/movies was as easy on Apple TV or a gaming console as Netflix is, I would drop it in a second. I’m paying them exclusively for convenience and to fund my laziness.

[–] 30p87@feddit.org 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'd just put any old laptop in place of each lol

[–] misterdoctor@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I’ve honestly given that some serious thought. A mini pc or laptop as a dedicated media server or streaming device wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.

[–] probably2high@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'll be honest, there's some fiddling, but you can run a jellyfin server from a laptop/desktop pretty easily for home streaming.

If you can find your way to the jellyfin-server installer for your OS, and point it at a library folder, just putting media in that folder is all you have left to do--it pretty much takes care of the rest, and all streams over your local home network.

The thing that always gets me isn’t necessarily the setup, it’s just the ease of access with Netflix or D+. If I want to re-watch all of Daredevil, it’s just there. I don’t have to download anything, it’s just ready whenever I feel like watching.

It’s sheer laziness on my part, but I accept that.

[–] 30p87@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

it's just there

Until it isn't. Either because the license is too expensive, or runs out, other random streaming service got it, not available in your country ...

Piracy means you have it. Forever. Unchanged. No taksies-backsies. No (half a) dozen subscriptions to get access to even 80% of content.

Or the fuckers decide that your tier can now only play in 720p or some shit and you have to shell out a fiver more. And repeat it in 3 years.

[–] TwanHE@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Currently using stremio with the torrentio plugin on a Chromecast. Works so smoothly you might forget its pirating

[–] misterdoctor@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I’ve never heard of either of those so I have some research to do lol

[–] MrShankles@reddthat.com 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I cancelled all of my streaming services once I got Stremio set-up, and I've never wanted to go back. It's awesome

Though it's on reddit, this is a guide that worked well for me. I use firesticks, but there's other options. I can even watch from my phone (android, it's not on iOS that I know of)

Thank you for the link!

[–] useyourmainfinger@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I've recently done the same, got an android tv box, mecool km2 plus deluxe, added projectivty launcher, my vpn and stremio with torrrentio and it's been great...

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

You also can take the lazy and cheap way out, transfer some files to a flash drive or external hdd and plug it in to the console/tv, most have USB ports now.

[–] Xenobiotic@sh.itjust.works 56 points 2 days ago

People still pay for this shit?

[–] RQG@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago (3 children)

You can disable auto play in the account settings. I needed to login on the website to do that but it works on my TV now.

[–] BreadOven@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Same. Although it's (at least on my TV) profile-specific. Regardless if it's all on the same account.

[–] criss_cross@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I tried that and it still autoplays :(

[–] shasta@lemm.ee 3 points 1 day ago

Must have done it wrong then?

[–] TheSambassador@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's fair, but for awhile that setting only worked on desktop, and various apps still may or may not respect the setting. I've never encountered someone who enjoys this being on be default.

[–] RQG@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

That could be the case. Guess I'm lucky my old ass TV seems to respect the setting.

Just set up my living room Linux pc with Kodi and got all my shows and movies in one nice spot all organized with a beautiful ui. Kodi has many themes, extensions and cool stuff like controller support and the connectivity to other software like jellyfin to stream locally.

Highly recommend it 🏴‍☠️

I wish Kodi had a better interface for playing YouTube videos. Searching and finding a video to watch with that UI is terrible.

[–] domi@lemmy.secnd.me 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In case you didn't know, you can send a YouTube URL to Kodi by sharing it from your phone to the Kore app.

So you can do your browsing on your phone/tablet and when you want to watch something on the big screen, you just share it with the Kore app and it will start playing.

[–] proton_lynx@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

I didn't know about that. This is neat, I'm gonna try it later. Thanks!

[–] BroBot9000@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Didn’t know that Kodi could play YouTube videos. I just downloaded all of Dragon Ball Z Abridged and set it up like a show 😆

If you want a great experience with YouTube I can highly recommend the freetube app. It’s worked flawlessly so far on my Linux setup. Just needs updates occasionally like everything else.

If you want a really beautiful experience with Kodi I can highly recommend the “Copacetic” skin.

I hate that when I pause to read something an ad pops up

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 2 days ago

Think about the poor KPIs that will not be met otherwise. And try not to think about Goodhart's law.

[–] DragonsInARoom@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

This assumes they don't block you for not being at home

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Mute button .... playing everything on mute until I'm ready to watch whatever it is I want to watch

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Valid, but shouldn't be necessary.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Why not use the actual scene from The Fugitive?
