I honestly don't think the fediverse will ever take off - and that's a good thing. If it was to get too mainstream, eventually it would need to be standardised and controllerd to accommodate the average person, which would defeat the point of the fediverse as a whole. Imagine if everyone started using Linux as their daily driver tomorrow; a lot would be fixed, but a lot of the original identity would be broken

That's like saying: "Imagine every country just got rid of monarchy became Republics"

For the average consumer it just isn't the same without being screwed by big companies.

Imagine the hacker news userbase getting drowned out by redditors and bots on a massive scale never seen before. Anybody coming back to the site will scoff at the idea of yet another board wasted by enshitification.
