I’m interested in a phone with a physical keyboard. There is a mod for the FairPhone I spotted, but that’s not fully supported in the US yet. So I’m looking at buying the inspiration for the mod the BlackBerry Key2. I’ve heard it can be hard to get other firmwares on it. I’m particularly eyeing CalyxOS. Has anyone had any luck with this.

I've been using a Unihertz Titan Pocket. I've been too lazy to flush the ROM to LineageOS. I actually will buy a second one as a backup for the future until I can figure out something else.

This is almost exactly what I’m after. Will probably pick one of these up and experiment with flashing it. The big assumption I feel like is that the keyboard just registers as a normal HID/USB device and will work with any os. Fingerprint and stuff could be fiddly, but we’ll see.

It seemed like the Key2 recently got a successful bootloader unlock. There's no custom rom for it yet but hopefully someone might in the near future. Or you can just debloat the stock rom, but that would be Android 8.1.

Keytwo is my all time favourite phone, ive not found something that is as good as it was, so I'd be interested in if you have any success with this.

Others phones with keyboard you could look into are Unihertz titan and titan slim. I owned a titan and it was a pretty good phone although somewhat large, I know there is a small community of people doing things with it but I could never get my bootloader to unlock.

The titan slim is a copy of the keytwo form factor and I have been very tempted but never got around to trying one out.

Fx tec pro also exists but they seem over priced and out dated, not sure on how receptive they are to new ROMs or if there is even a community behind this one.

I'm going to be watching This project going forward and if it seems decent may try switching to using a data sim in a hotspot box in my bag and just use this as a primary device.

I already have my eye on doing a hotspot from the Calyx Institute and then whatever devices I fancy that have WiFi. I have a phone sized e-reader I already do this with using my phone hotspot, so I’ve considered just making that my norm.

I’ve also got my eye on a few Linux handheld projects for the same reason, and honestly I might lean toward those so I can get more modern hardware. Could potentially incorporate a usb cellular antenna with a Linux handheld to streamline the tethering process.

I recently found a window manager for Linux that is designed for phone sized displays. I’m forgetting the name at the moment, but I’ll come back and update this once I find it.
