It's never accidental...
You click a link in an MS app and it launches Edge regardless of the default browser setting, then plays it off as a "feature".

Windows: "Oh you want to open a PDF? You must want to use an MS Web Browser."
User: "No Thank you Windows, please use app X"
Windows: "I got you fam, app X for PDFs from now on"
...later...
Windows: "Oh you want to open a PDF? You must want to use an MS Web Browser."
Edge after you install a security update:
"I imported all your data and made myself the default"
And without your knowledge, it copies all data from your actual browser.
Yeah, Edge has been forbidden to execute in my antivirus (ESET HIPS) for a long time now.
Shit I should do that too, I already reported it (ACCC), I don't think a second time is worth it.
Wait, what?!
Yep, I accidentally opened a news article when the news panel slid out without my knowledge, then I realised all my tabs, bookmarks, passwords, everything, was imported from chrome to edge. No consent, no nothing, it wasn't even the first time I opened edge, it was just that this time it involved my data. Safe to say I reported it to the ACCC (Australian competition and consumer commission) and did as much as I could to erase my data from edge and stop edge from opening as easily.
Like all MS products today, it's actually really good after wasting an hour unchecking all the hidden options that make it unbearable spyware.
And then check peridoically for new options that you have to turn off...
And the old settings that have been mysteriously switched back on...
And it still ends up being worse than its FOSS competitor...
No MS product I have interacted with in the last couple years I would consider good, even ignoring the spyware.
I love this meme but have no proper nerds in my life that would understand and appreciate it.
That's why we hang out on Lemmy
Ok I'm only going to say one nice thing about edge, the PDF editing functionality is on par with Adobe and it's free.
Agree, and just viewing PDFs has much less clutter around the outside than Adobe.
Haters gonna hate. But I've been using Edge for a year now as my main browser and I prefer it over Google's browser. Yes, it was built on the Chromium open-source project. But the end result is what I was after. Something that wasn't just Google's 'X.' Industry competition is very much needed.
You can't say that on lemmy man it's illegal.
If that's illegal, I'm sure saying that I don't use Linux nor have I ever used Linux, to be highly illegal.
Everyone gets to have their preference. What's not ok is MS trying to force it on people who don't want it.
completely agree. i think a lot of people (myself included) will probably never give edge a fair chance because of how insidious and annoying microsoft has been about trying to get people to use it. i don’t really hate edge as a browser (i’ve never really tried it), but i do hate the feeling of the browser being forced upon me
I did a fresh install of windows 11 and I opened edge the first time only to crash after a second because it couldn't handle the fact that I wasn't signed into a Microsoft account.
It crashed immediately every successive attempt to open it.
After the 15th try (mostly for my own amusement) I downloaded Firefox from the windows store so that there'd be a functional browser in the VM I had just set up for someone to use to run essentially the last scamware app he still needs for hopefully not much longer (cough intuit cough)
Vs Chrome? Naw. Everyone's allowed their opinion, but those who prefer Edge usually haven't actually used modern Firefox, especially with the right extensions. I never install it without uBlock Origin and Consent-O-Matic...
Cool. Let's force it on everyone else then. Go competition!
HOLY AI UPSCALE WITH CLARITY, BATMAN!!
And then begins the gruelling quest of navigating all the "how many ways can we ask how much we can spy on you and change settings so this happens more often, so we can track you more, ooh look here, new features! (They're just fronts for more tracking)" pop-ups which seem never ending.
Since Shai Halud swallowed up Rita and spit her out (as evidenced by this 1000% true photo of her crawling out of a sand worm) does she get the same powers as Ragnar has in that new Dune show?
Because if she does, the Power Rangers are turbo fucked.
If you’re on Windows then it’s the best Chromium browser available
That's like the best-tasting pile of human excrement.
I used Edge but stopped once they began adding ads (the only way to disable them are via flags and that doesn't even disable all)
Then around this year it began to automatically open after updating so I blocked the executable from running via regedit
I can hear this meme...
So are the other browsers Power Rangers?
Well at least Chrome is kinda multicolor...
Firefox tho... I can't recall the last season that had a mammal ranger (it's usually dinosaurs or vehicles), let alone an orange Ranger.
It's one of the "weird rangers", like the white, green, or purple ranger.
Frustrating the only browser you can get a compliance search in m365 downloaded with. So I have to open it more often than I want.
edge works great for Teams Web. Runs better than the pile of shit Teams native runs as.
and that's all I'll use it for.
