Here’s my 100 most listened to albums on last.fm for reference of what my taste is like, don’t let that stop you from recommending me things you think I won’t like though I’m trying to expand my horizons.

I also like listening to small artists, I write a series of artist features all about people less than a million Spotify listeners so if you have any recommendations for that lmk.

Somewhere in the In-between by Streetlight Manifesto

I've been slowly digging into their discography recently and holy crap Ska is so funny because it'll be a bopping tune but then you catch the lyrics and find it's a song about war, death, collapse, etc.

This music video definitely embodies that same disconnect. Cute animal animation with bopping music except wait what are those people doing? What are those animals doing? Oh my is that how this ends?!

I might have missed it but I don’t see the Under Pressure album for Logic. Might to get your listens up on that one

Literally anything by Nappy Roots.

The Game is underrated IMO.

Chiddy Bang — Opposite of Adults

I really like Mark Battles. “Real Ones, “Numbers2” and “How” are solid tracks.

“Nina” by Rhapsody is a great track.

Suite for Ma Dukes by Miguel Atwood Ferguson. Live recording of a Dilla tribute concert with a 60 piece orchestra. Stakes Is High with Posdnuos and Talib Kweli is a standout. Album is on Bandcamp and the full concert video is on YouTube.

In the World: From Natchez to New York by Olu Dara. He's the father of Nas (who guests on the album) and an accomplished jazz musician in his own right, but this isn't a jazz album. Okra is in my top three songs about food.

Fela Soul by Amerigo Gazaway. A mashup of De La Soul and Fela Kuti. "Music is the weapon. Music is the future. Music is the weapon of the future."

I see a lot of my favorites in that list. Some of my top albums I don't see:

  • Negro Swan and Cupid Deluxe by blood orange
  • IV by badbadnotgood
  • injury reserve by injury reserve
  • Don't You by Wet (pretty significant vibe shift from the others, maybe you'll like it)
