I dont use iOS, but are people seriously injecting AI in between them and their loved ones?

[–] KoalaUnknown@lemmy.world 96 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It’s a feature in the beta, and for some reason people actually turn it on.

[–] vinyl@lemmy.world 39 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Cause they are excited and dumb

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 25 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I mean also AI summarizing conversations is a useful feature as long as you view it as what it is. Potentially one of the few examples where an LLM is actually useful. My family has an ongoing group chat that is constantly just dumb shit; some days just 100 messages ranting about something or other, but sometimes there’s something worth seeing like events and the like. Trusting AI to glean all the information properly is dumb. Being able to use it to quickly grep what’s happening before doing your own reading isn’t.

[–] lime@feddit.nu 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

unfortunately most llms are pretty terrible at summarizing too

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah, I think it takes the GDP of a medium country to develop an AI that isn’t awful (of course Apple has enough money to own there own country so I don’t know what there problem is)

[–] lime@feddit.nu 4 points 2 weeks ago

One conclusion the draw from that is that the problem seems to be inherent to the concept of llms. they are fuzzy by nature.

[–] fallingcats@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 weeks ago

Way more than that aus already been spent

[–] flames5123@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Exactly. It can summarize emails, so I don’t need to open everything I get. If it looks important, I’m gonna open it and read the whole thing, but an OK summary is good enough for most notifications.

Cause you get hilarious posts like this

[–] lemonadebunny@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

From what I've seen it's all on-device using their new chip, but I really don't trust Apple to not collect data with it

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 27 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Even without considering privacy, why would you want it to re-write incoming texts? It's not like those are usually unreasonably long to read

[–] xpinchx@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Probably just a summary on the lock screen?

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 19 points 2 weeks ago

"Here's an attempt to re-write the thing you're going to read the original of anyway" seems like a waste of time too

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 115 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I love how the summary is actually longer.

TL;DR
How is this a summary? Summaries are supposed to the shorter, hence the name, but this summary is longer so it is not really a summary. AI has failed us, we are doomed.

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 51 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Love the TL;DR on this one

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 weeks ago

Thanks, it gives more context as TL;DRs should always do but often fail because of lazy

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Oi you just learned not to let Apple summarize things! Bad lemming, straight back to your room with you!

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

thanks for providing more info for those of us who thought Too Little; Didn't Register

[–] lugal@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

POV: I'm doing my part

[–] hypertown@lemmy.world 65 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I love the fact that summery is longer than original message.

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago

the original was probably a human made summary

[–] kn33@lemmy.world 23 points 2 weeks ago

Given that specific locations were named, I assume that the original message says more than what the tweet says it does.

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 49 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Summarizing texts from your mom. Oof.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 38 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Legitimately—who is even asking for this, I don't remember someone ever sending me a text that was so long I found myself wishing for a summary.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I used it (some android version of it popped up) when driving to an eventthe other day and the other people were texting as I was on my way. It tried to summarize the entire 9-month conversation not just new messages, and it thought the group chat name - "Bilbo Baggins My Balls" - was just one person talking to me, so it was complete nonsense that completely distracted me while driving. AI strikes again.

[–] Kazumara@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 2 weeks ago

“Bilbo Baggins My Balls”

Good group name though!

[–] spongebue@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a solution in search of a problem. And boy are they searching.

[–] Cryophilia@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Bubble bubble, toil and trouble

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

Sometimes, i have 1000 unread messages

[–] AGuyAcrossTheInternet@fedia.io 33 points 2 weeks ago

Oh great, so the AI summary basically turns mum's texts into dad's texts!

maybe we just need to Think Differently about what it means for something to be a summary

[–] jdeath@lemm.ee 4 points 2 weeks ago

siri is getting a much edgier sense of humor, is all that's happening here
