It's the same kind of energy like the usual "the grant parents built the business, the parents expanded it and the children ran it into the ground"

Or even the theory of empires falling. The first generations establish the empire and make it wealthy, over the next generations people get greedy and decadent, infighting starts and the whole thing collapses. Some say this is happening right now to an empire in all but name.
