Is it still up, because that could explain things.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 26 points 3 months ago (3 children)

That and who thinks Iran would even be able to pay up?

[–] JustZ@lemmy.world 38 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Why wouldn't they be able to pay up?

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 16 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Why would they have to? The second the assassin revealed themselves to collect, they would be the most hunted person on the planet.

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 15 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Iran's soft power is only as good as its word.

[–] JustZ@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago (2 children)
[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Let’s say they only reveal themselves to Iran though @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world - what about sanctions?

Do they have $80 million in crypto?

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The sanctions on Iran don't prevent them from transfering money to most of the world, and 80 million dollars is pocket change for almost every single country.

They could have the money on a Cayman Islands or Swiss account by the end of the day, the problem is living long enough to spend it.

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Is there a point to sanctions if they can transfer money to buying agents for whatever they need? Maybe the sanctions are all weapons & tech related or something.

Hmm, guess they used to be able to do U-turn payments just by using banks in various counties. If that’s harder now then it’s prob more expensive to get whatever they need since they have to pay someone enough to make it worthwhile for them to break the law. 🤷‍♂️

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 3 months ago

Look for example at the EU Sanctions, they impact around 270 individuals and organisations, but allow Iran to conduct legitimate business. The problem is that 80 million is relatively easy to pay in the middle of some of the legitimate business.

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 37 points 3 months ago (1 children)

If they did, I bet it would be one of those enormous cheques, like on Publishers Clearinghouse

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 12 points 3 months ago

The Iranian Ed McMahon comes to the assassin's door...

[–] delirious_owl@discuss.online -1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Pretty sure a DAO would solve this

[–] PyroNeurosis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I'm too American, so this reads as "double-action only" as regards to pistol mechanisms.

What does it mean for normal people?

[–] delirious_owl@discuss.online 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Decentralized autonomous organization. Its commonly used in bug bounties to decide when to pay out.

Two attempts after being a walking bag of human refuse for 84 years isn’t very surprising. It’s actually surprising that there haven’t been more.

[–] MrVilliam@lemmy.world 75 points 3 months ago (2 children)

The real crazy part is that it'd be perfectly legal for Joe Biden to issue the same offer, so long as it's through professional channels as an official act. The SCOTUS said so. Hell, to make it crystal clear, just order it through the military and then watch from the situation room. He could take out a few SCOTUS justices at the same time. And then unilaterally dictate that that sort of shit is not legal going forward. Best October surprise ever.

[–] Don_Dickle@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago (3 children)

I am taking you read the recent news about Clinton and the October Suprise?

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 months ago

What was that?

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Pizzagate was kind of a joke though, all the damage from the email leaks involving the DNC was already done by then.

The only thing it accomplished was maybe slightly increasing Republican votes. Everyone on the left side had already decided how they would vote.

It's similar to Harris in that she chose to ignore the uncommitted movement a while ago, which means most of the left has already decided how they're gonna vote. Any last minute details are unlikely to change much unless it's seriously huge.

[–] MrVilliam@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)
[–] Don_Dickle@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Hillary said she was accused of pizzagate, look it up in google, and they trainwrecked he whole campaign even if it was made up. So it came in October for her and she is warning Harris that be wary because something could pop up and derail your who campaign no matter how ubserd it sounds.

[–] MrVilliam@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago

Oh, I thought there was some new story. Yeah, I was aware of that 8 years ago. And the "Hillary's emails" "scandal". And the trump "grab them by the pussy" tape. It's all so cyclical. Nothing surprises me anymore. There will be firehosing to distract from trump's actual existential disqualifications. He's an easily manipulated, lying, stupid asshole. Meanwhile Harris is compassionate and educated, and has been duly elected to all three branches of government. She and Walz aren't perfect, but it's laughable to suggest that the alternative in this election is even worth considering. Anybody who believes something in the realm of pizzagate in this election cycle is feverishly searching for an excuse to vote for trump without being honest about their hated for women, minorities, and/or anybody left of the extreme right.

[–] HottieAutie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago

Best October surprise ever.

lmaooooo 🤣🤣

[–] delirious_owl@discuss.online 41 points 3 months ago (3 children)

Is there a smaller payout if we just deport him and dump him off at The Hauge?

We could feed two birds with one scone. Take the money and build some affordable housing.

[–] Nuke_the_whales@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

The u.s would never allow one of their ex presidents to ever go to prison, let alone at the Hague. There are literally plans to attack the Hague and extract the ex president if that ever happens.

[–] hydrospanner@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

The bounty is posted by Iran... wouldn't it be better for everyone if we dropped him off at Tehran?

[–] delirious_owl@discuss.online 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

No, he should get a trial and a fair sentence

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

He’ll have died by the time he is sentenced to everything. He’s got more trials to face than years left to live.

[–] delirious_owl@discuss.online 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I see no reason to let him out of jail in between each trial

First things first the delay in sentencing before the election was a joke

In some countries, if they find you on the streets they'll grab your ass and throw it into an apartment. And put a fat wad of cash in your hand! The nerve of some countries, man..

[–] poo@lemmy.world 40 points 3 months ago

Can.....can I contribute to their Kickstarter?

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 34 points 3 months ago

When Trump said he would debate Biden anywhere, any time, I said Biden should agree to a debate in Tehran.

[–] thesohoriots@lemmy.world 28 points 3 months ago

Man, people tried harder against Salman Rushdie for $6 million.

[–] djsoren19@yiffit.net 15 points 3 months ago (2 children)

How would you even collect? Better yet, can you collect both this bounty and the $150,000 "posted" by his would-be assassin?

[–] PhlubbaDubba@lemm.ee 5 points 3 months ago

Probably by certifying intent beforehand and having them provide exit support so you can go to Iran and spend the rest of your life there out of reach of US retaliation, assuming a minimal willingness to hunt you down in a foreign nation.

Things would probably get complicated if the regime collapsed though, non zero chance those 80 million dollars would become useless as a new state tries to establish its own monetary policy, and that's assuming they aren't western friendly and decide to extradite you to curry favor.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago

You could make a PDF of the assassination plot, hash it, and get the hash timestamped. Then after the assassination, publish the PDF.

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago

They should put more.

[–] dan1101@lemm.ee 5 points 3 months ago

That shows you that life isn't like spy and action movies.
