While cool, this article is a bit old

Published on June 17, 2024

No problem with sharing it again, this is more for anyone else who was wondering if new details were released

Fair call. I only just got the community update so I hadn't seen it.

They just sent out a mass email to users yesterday informing us of this, I got it too. I wonder if it wasn't getting enough attention, or if they wrote this back in June but only just made the article visible.

Wasn't it part of a catch-up of the past year of news or something?

I’ll simp for proton all day and this is just another reason why

[-] mipadaitu@lemmy.world 29 points 1 month ago

I wish they just didn't jump on current hypes, like crypto and AI.

[-] SteveFromMySpace@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 month ago

Proton is in the crypto game?

[-] helenslunch@feddit.nl 13 points 1 month ago

They just made a Bitcoin wallet.

[-] psmgx@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago

Aye, given their focus on privacy it's not a huge surprise. Probably something that got asked for a lot in surveys.

Now if they started shilling ProtonCoin or something...

[-] helenslunch@feddit.nl 8 points 1 month ago

Bitcoin is not private. Monero is the privacy coin.

[-] Grippler@feddit.dk 14 points 1 month ago

Both are useless as payment in the real world at any meaningful scale ATM.

[-] EngineerGaming@feddit.nl 1 points 1 month ago

I pay for my VPS and domain with Monero. It will never be as big as Visa, but it doesn't have to be - it has its niche.

[-] helenslunch@feddit.nl -2 points 1 month ago

Meh. Yes and no. There's actually quite a few places that accept Bitcoin at this point. Alternatively, you can use it to buy gift cards for many different retailers.

But yeah, you usually can't walk up to the checkout counter and tap your card, unfortunately.

It's not unfortunate. It's not accepted as currency because it does none of the things currency is for.

Holding a consistent value.

Volatility in a currency makes it completely and utterly useless.

[-] helenslunch@feddit.nl -1 points 1 month ago

Fiat doesn't do that either. Ever heard of inflation?

[-] conciselyverbose@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Moderate, relatively steady growth is not remotely comparable to routine wild fluctuations.

[-] helenslunch@feddit.nl -1 points 1 month ago

The unfortunate result of speculative investors trying to ride the next wave.

[-] conciselyverbose@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

The inherent nature of a currency not managed intelligently by a competent government.

A LLM to write emails and a crypto wallet were among the least voted/requested features on their last big survey and yet barely a month after the survey was done, they've released both things.

There's still no calendar widget on Android and iOS and other very basic things that have been widely requested for years now

[-] r_se_random@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

I have a calendar widget on my Samsung S22.

Ew. I just noticed this when I logged into my GoDaddy account too.

Ew oh well. At least unlike brave and others it isn’t shoved in my face all the time. Been a paying user for two years now and I didn’t even know about it lol
