They still seem to require a real name if I look at the registration process. Kind of a deal breaker to me.

What happens if you put whatever you want in there?

Or start your own instance? Or join an instance that doesn't care?

I guess at worse they would ban you. It's a closed off system though, so you can't even check whether people frequently use (obvious) fake names or not.

Edit: Small correction. You can actually see some users and their names in the Discovery tab, some with obvious non real names. I'm guessing it depends on your instance whether how much they care about it.

i doubt you'll get banned lol, it's probably not that deep to the admins.

if anyone is concerned about it, just open the instance ToS and ctrl+f "name". im sure it's not important.

I just put my first name there and nothing else

Pixelfed is nice but their porn filters just don't work at all.

I am on the main flagship instance. If you click the explore tab, you see porn. Instantly.

Idk if this is intended or not but until they fix that it simply can't go mainstream lol.

Wow Pixelfed is evolving much quicker than I expected. I didn't know about the import feature, sure it is convenient for newcomers

I think the wrong question is being asked. Instead of "what's a good replacement for IG?" the question should be "do we even need an app like IG to begin with?". And I would say the answer is no.
