With great pleasure may I announce that our move off of wlroots is now complete and MR 6608 is now merged.

After over 1000 comments on 6608 alone, and over 3 months of the entire process, the rewrite is done.

With it, Hyprland is no longer a wlroots-based Wayland compositor, and instead, a fully independent implementation of the protocol.

Don’t worry though, all your wlroots apps will still work.

Beef between creator of hyprland and creator of wlroots. Creator of hyprland is banned from contributing to wlroots so I guess it makes sense to not rely on software you're not allowed to modify (obviously he can fork it but he can't participate in the upstream project)

Wow, I'd no idea it was something like that. Had assumed it was some technical direction complaint where Hyprland couldn't go where its leadership wanted because of how wlroots was being made... nooope!

re-rewrite Okay I've done more looking and according to Vaxry there are technical reasons. Just... no one's talking about them. It's just "ooooh 🤤 wow so impressive rewriting wlroots!" and a little bit of back-and-forth over, basically, whether Hyprland's community is full of bigots or just likes keeping its fruit cold (see: freeze peach). Very weird situation, in terms of this news. I'd expect to see discussion of the merits of this change (which, again, Vaxry did... if you go find that blog post!). 🤷

tl;dr: Looks like Vaxry wanted to replace wlroots for tech reasons and does not interact with hunams well. Hyprland community probably crap, probably why FreeDesktop kicked him. 🤷

wanders off very shruggily

Hyprland has always been using forked wlroots

Why were they banned?

Another Wayland implementation! Just what we needed!

I wonder what exciting features this will support years after KDE.

Aight, I've spent my allotted 20 minutes reading open source project drama and still don't get this comment. Mind sharing some context?
