I had the same feeling until i started to go for the 6 challenge badge and the million score badge. Now i have all of the badges and even won an 8 challenge run. Only thing left is to beat 9 challenge run and i have been attempting that almost weekly. I've been pretty close a few times.
If you want more challenge, the chals are right there. I very much relate to the mindless playing on a run that's too easy (i.e. no chal)
