I"ve been playing this in early access for a while now....

Based on the current state of the game, october seems a bit rushed

They have a lot of bugs to fix, and a lot of optimization to do to get the fps up to where it needs to be.

Was wondering how long it would take someone to try to replicat Helldiver's success with this same narrative.

[-] UnbrokenTaco@lemm.ee 26 points 3 months ago

Not sure if sarcasm/trolling. Forgive me for saying so if it isn't. This game has been available in early access long before helldivers 2. Starship troopers the movie has much the same tone as this trailer.

I probably should have been more specific in that I'm surprised it took a studio this long with the Starship Trooper's license to build something with similar FPS gameplay and mechanics as Helldivers 2.

I know the book (great) and movie (entertaining af verhooven at his best) predate Helldivers.

I probably could have worded things better sorry for the confusion.

Ah but I was saying that even this game predates helldivers 2. It's been in early access for quite some time

I must confess that I haven't read the book but I had heard the tone is not quite the same

It's been in EA since early last year at least

I know, cause I bought it when it first released into EA.

This is a co-op FPS with 16-player PvE and by looking at the teaser it also involes base building, so not exactly the same type of game.

As for the narrative, Helldivers is obviously based on the Starship Troopers movie (the plot, the action, even the "patriotic theme"), which itself was heavily inspired by StarCraft. So no one is really "replicating Helldivers narrative" here.

spot on

!?? I read Heinlein's Starship Troopers in the early 80s lol, not sure you meant that the way it reads. ST the book and subsequent verhooven movie were not inspired by Starcraft.

[-] Blizzard@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 months ago

Holy shit! I had no idea it was based on a book! The movie really looked like StarCraft without the Protoss. So the rabbit whole goes even deeper, good to know.

[-] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

the book is fantastic but doesn't really emphasize a lot of the fun themes you'll find in the film. worth a read, it's short af.

[-] Zahille7@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Almost as if the movie was made into a satire of the book it's based on 😱🤯

[-] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

yes, but also, it explores the universe heinlein created in ways i'm certain he never anticipated (talking heads on TV shows being a great example).

it is a right wing libertarian manifesto, but good book is still good book.

Still inaccurate to the book, hard pass.

[-] Quexotic@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 months ago

Without the philosophical overtones and the anti military industrial complex theme, I don't think I'd want to play it.

[-] RecluseRamble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 months ago

I actually liked the movie better than the book. One of those rare examples.
