If you feel any better: i think that modern requirements for games are bizarrely too high for relatively small gains over what we had 10 years ago.

Yes, because

  • developers can't be bothered to optimize the game if management breathes into their necks
  • DRM like Denuvo tanks performance, ironically only for the people not pirating and thus paying for the game
[–] ZeDoTelhado@lemmy.world 26 points 6 months ago (1 children)

No kidding, denuvo made me stop buying games every time because I just detest it and what it stands for. Also, boggles resources way too much (and no, having a root kit is a no no for me). But more importantly, single player games with denuvo is the ultimate low.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 18 points 6 months ago

The fact denuvo can make a 20+ year old port run like garbage is especially impressivly bad. It's sometimes hard to avoid, but usually it gets dropped because it's a subscription a publisher has to pay. Patient gamers just have to be patient.

Fuck it, we’ll just have it render at 320p and let FSR upscale it to 4k.

I'm still using a GTX 1070 and none of the games I play has had issues yet. The most recent games I've played on it were hitman 3, cult of the Lamb and Cross code. None of the games are that demanding but they were all good. I guess I just don't play AAA titles (although hitman 3 is AAA but older).

I recently went installed GTA SA and my CPU was running at freaking 20% with graphics cranked up. I remember when I played it around 2010 by potato PC was lagging and freezing. But anyway the game still rocks after 24 damn years and it only requires 4-5 GB

Back in the day the online servers for that game were crazy fun.

[–] Hiro8811@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Never really played online, remember I did it a few times but it stopped working

anti piracy measures and cost cutting when optimizing games

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 23 points 6 months ago (3 children)

By "optimizing" do you mean going through the source code and adding comments referring to Optimus Prime? Because that's called "optimus priming" and we had a whole two hours about it in coding camp.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 15 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (2 children)

"optimizing" is a portmenteau coming from "optical minimizing". the technique involves not using glasses, so you can't tell when your code is trash.

[–] Liz@midwest.social 11 points 6 months ago (1 children)

"Optimizing" is where you convince your programmers that microdosing MDMA is great for productivity and they all end up being really optimistic about how their code is doing.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago

The peer coding review went really well. I think we're getting married.

I thought I told you to stop giving away my secrets.

[–] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 4 points 6 months ago

May want to see about a refund...

[–] tory@lemmy.world 4 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Standard autobot documentation. Nice, nice. What's your TC?

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

My T count? Unfortunately, I lost count of how many times I typed T somewhere in the 60,000 range, which means that's what my programming salary tops out at.

Indie games my beloved

Just purchased it from the bargain bin at Walmart two days ago! It's got state if the art features like 32-bit color (HDR is only 10-bit, so this is advanced!), 8 gigabytes, and it even comes with a built in PlayStation 2!

[–] Zaros@lemmy.world 10 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Why, it was just yesterday when I... oh, come to think of it, that was nearly a decade ago. Huh.

[–] FilterItOut@thelemmy.club 3 points 6 months ago

It's okay, we're in this together. Though, my rig runs just about everything at medium graphics without issue. Elden ring ran on high settings without dropping my frames to a noticeable level.

[–] Pencilnoob@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

Absolutely meirl. I keep making frame rate drops on games, but my CPU is ... Checks date.. top of the line 2012 tech!

[–] veroxii@aussie.zone 9 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Oh, it's powerful Tommy. It's tip-top!

[–] sensiblepuffin@lemmy.world 2 points 6 months ago

I'm just not sure about the color, is all.

[–] Track_Shovel@slrpnk.net 1 points 6 months ago

buurrhh eEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEchhhhh srkkrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

[–] ZeDoTelhado@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Not sure how new, but has a turbo button. That should be good for something, right?

[–] XEAL@lemm.ee 1 points 6 months ago

Ah, yes, the reverse turbo button!

[–] ParabolicMotion@lemmy.world 8 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

This. My husband used to spend most of his unemployment on graphics cards. All for gaming. All of it.

[–] Pencilnoob@lemmy.world 6 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Ok but what crow time comic,

Edit, Crow Time is amazing
