We definitely get too tied up in tiny differences, but it isn't all bullshit either. I think there are at lease three real issues where the cheap vs expensive argument means something.

  1. Safety and Reliability. Better steel, quality manufacturing, and good design result in knives that you can count on to work as intended. Cheap knives are more likely to fail in unexpected ways. Some of those failures can injure you. Some of them may leave you without a working knife when you really need a knife. These are low-percentage issues, but the consequences can be significant.

I think of it in terms of buying a motorcycle helmet. You aren't all that likely to need it, but if you do, a good helmet will get you through with less serious injuries. The classic advice is "go ahead and get a $20 helmet if you think you have a $20 head".

  1. Knockoffs. Intellectual property is often abused, but there are both ethical and practical reasons to allow people to benefit from their innovations. A lot of the cheap knives out there are knockoffs of best sellers that earned their positions honestly. Buying knockoffs makes the originals more expensive. They make it harder for quality manufacturers to stay in business. And they discourage good design.

  2. Happiness. It is worth noting that many of us pay more for a good knife just for the satisfaction of owning it. Carrying things that make us happy, even if they don't have practical advantages, is not meaningless.

No way Tenacious has as good steel as PM2

[–] merde@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

did he say that in the video?

His edge retention "test" shows there's not that much difference, and a $40 knife is ok relatively to the more expensive one. But S30V is one of the main reasons why PM2 is more expensive, and this steel really makes a difference. In my experience, in terms of edge retention, any super steel is much better than a cheaper steel. While AUS8 dulls very fast from light use, CTS XHP, S30V, S35VN, M390 etc. take forever to dull. I have knives I never sharpened because they are still sharp.

P.S. Maybe we should be less serious about this video. But the author told it's not a joke, so I don't know if he's serious or still joking.

if you take a look at his other videos, you can see that he is obsessed by edge retention, sharpness, hardness &c… all the things only "knife people" care about.

i think that he too is serious and he is making fun of all this seriousness. He makes a 15 minute video about negligible details and he always adds a moment where he makes fun of the subject itself.

i discovered his videos recently after watching a video of Cedric & Ada Gear and Outdoors

But the author told it’s not a joke, so I don’t know if he’s serious or still joking.

He's still joking.
