I'll start: I tried to move a bookshelf while drunk about 6 years ago and tore a tendon in my shoulder pretty damn good. It still bothers me sometimes if I move it wrong or sleep on it wrong.

In second grade I was at a school track meet. Didn’t have an event soon, so I was fucking around running up and down the bleachers.

Tripped and fell teeth-first. Broke a few of my front teeth. Fortunately many were still “baby” teeth, but not my two front teeth on the top.

Those two have been a constant struggle ever since. Crowns made of bonding material, then eventually root canals, posts, real crowns, then surgery going through the gums to shave down bone required because of a bad root canal, then a new crown because of a poor seal on one of the crowns…

I haven’t bit into an apple in decades, because I just know that if I do I could lose a crown. Last time I lost a crown was while eating a damn breakfast burrito.

My leg fell asleep and I got off the couch and tripped funny. Broke something in my left foot, it hurts every now and again. That's it, just a random oopsie from a guy in his 30s who is otherwise healthy, and a forever reminder of my shame.

Worst part, nobody believed me!

I fell off my entertainment unit, when I was too lazy to slide it out from the wall, to change a cable, and instead climbed up after working 7 days straight at a high impact job in extreme heat all week, I did a mild lose gravity, and landed hard on my knee. Doctor thinks I knocked my knee cap off, but it popped back in. Whole thing swelled twice the size. I probably should have gone to the er, but I just strapped it up and went back to work where my manager ridiculed me for such a huge bandage. The same manager I dragged myself into work for because I thought they'd be left stranded. I probably need surgery still, it doesn't hold my weight on a certain angle, but then I couldn't drive for a bit, and I don't know how I'd manage that with kids and such.

a friend of mine and myself were wrestling a bit in the front yard. i was probably in my early 20's. my thumb got caught in the collar of his t-shirt. we flipped around a bit and my thumb partially dislocated. i felt it start to pivot out of socket, and called for a stop. my friend immediately stopped and i was fine. it still aches to this day when i exert it. part of the issue is it's on my left hand and i use that thumb while doing things like playing guitar.

it's dumb but nothing else makes that joint really ache like that.

of all the ways i've been hurt over the years, it's stupid that that's the injury that gives me semi-on-going pain.

Had an earing, one day it got caught on a net and ripped out with the stopper.

Never again.

When I was a teenager we had a giant trampoline. One time I was jumping on it and I landed wrong and tweaked something in my back. From then on, If I twisted just right, I would have some sort of spasm in my lower back that would immediately put me on my knees. It used to happen fairly frequently but it's very rare anymore. I probably should have had it looked at but I didn't. I haven't been on a trampoline since. No need to aggravate that injury.

Was doing deliveries in college, considered the fastest one there. This was due to be actively running orders to houses / apartments.

Well, one such occasion I was coming back through a dark parking lot and thought I had another foot before the curb. Proceeded to land on the side of my ankle and roll to the ground. Figured it was fine (forgot adrenaline was a thing) so I got back to the car and drove to the store. Manager told me to go home lol.

Getting home, finally pulled off the shoes and socks and, boy oh boy, there was a softball in my ankle. University med clinic said it was just a severe sprain and to just keep off it.

To this day, 10 years on, my ankle is still slightly swollen. I can still run and walk on it though

Accidentally kicked something while running out of a room. Busted my big toe pretty good and the toenail eventually fell off. Two years on and the toenail still hasn't grown back right. Doctor gave a medication for a fungal infection that sort of has helped, but I'm not so sure it's ever gonna go back to normal, it just looks like the toenail keeps regrowing over itself but never grows out fully. So it grows 90% of the way, then stops, and it keeps growing over or under it. Gross to look at.

Slipped down my stairs and broke my finger. It now sits at an angle

20 years ago, I wanted to jump onto a concrete table tennis table in the school playground from a standing position with both feet at the same time. I didn't make it and hit my shin up to the bone.

After it was stitched up, it became badly infected weeks later and I had to have another operation while on vacation.

Now I have a 1 inch scar directly on the shin bone which hurts a lot every time I hit it.

I let my back round while leg pressing too much weight in college. Blinding back pain. I didn’t tell anyone and never got it looked at but I probably bulged a disc or something. Anyway, ever since then my back has been my weakest link. I’m not in constant pain, but it can go out on me pretty easily.

Don’t lift more than you can handle and observe proper form when doing heavy lifts, kids!

In high school I pierced the webbing of my left hand between my thumb and forefinger with a stud to look cool.

I hit nerves and destroyed the muscles in that part of my hand. It’s my dominant hand and still works okay, but I had to learn to do a few things with my right hand afterwards due to issues with lack of strength. Like, I can’t open jars and shit now with my shitty hand.

…and how quickly did it affect you?

Would be good additional information.

IOW, messed up your knees doing track events in college, got a knee replacement at 50 because you couldn’t take the pain anymore.

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The pain was immediate

I put my shoulder into the shelf and the it made a squelching popping sounds and hurt like hell

I waited 2 weeks before I went to the doctor because I was pretty damn broke and both my deductible and my out of pocket max were pretty damn high

When I finally did go to the doctor they did an ultrasound of my shoulder. I was talking with the tech who was doing the ultrasound and they suddenly sucked air through their teeth and went, "Oh that's not good."

3 months of physical therapy got it back to about 80% functional. After a year it was closer to about 95%. It's basically plateaued there but at least it only bothers me sometimes now rather than every breath I took like when it happened.

I injured my left arm years ago overdoing it on weight lifting and its still quite messed up.

In 2017, on a snowy January day, I was supposed to go to the gym before work. When I got to the subway station, the service was interrupted. I thought "I could just take one hour to briskly walk to work, and not go to the gym".

But it was fresh snow and it was abundant, all the sidewalk were still covered. And I didn't have proper boots for a 1 hours+ brisk walk in the snow.

I got to work, changed, and started working. After 2 hours, I want to get up, but I immediately fall back on my chair.

I had hurt both my Achilles tendons at the ankle. My tendinitis in the right ankle healed well, but the one in the left ankle still hurts when I walk for too long. And sometimes just hurts because.

[–] Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 9 months ago

I feel you man

I literally laid down wrong night before last and my shoulder slid out again

Still hurts but not nearly as bad as it did right after

Does being indoctrinated by society counts as a long lasting Injury?

[–] DumbAceDragon@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago

Slipped on a treadmill as it was running and chipped my tooth. Had to get it capped twice since the first cap fell off after a couple years. Not supposed to chew gum any since that happened but that hasn't stopped me.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Tried to open a can of ravioli in tomato sauce with a pair of pliars. Bad idea, 0/10, won't recommend. Still have the scar 30+ years later.
