From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

I installed Pop_OS in place of ubuntu last week, and loving it so far. Most things worked out-of-the-box, but there is this one thing that has been bothering me.

Whenever I open the lid of my laptop, the fan goes crazy and becomes very loud. Strangely, changing the battery option to "High Performance" seems to silence it. Why is this happening, and how can I remedy this issue?

  • My laptop is ASUS ROG Zephyrus, and yes I should not have chosen this one.

Did you check if there is high load when the fan spins up?

[–] someacnt_@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yep, I think the load should be pretty low since only firefox is running with 0~1 tabs opened.

It should, yes. But is it, actually?

[–] someacnt_@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Is there a way to see this? Sorry, I am lost.

You could use the system Monitor, it is built-in.

Ah, it seems to briefly spikes to 100%, then dies down later.

So the fans stay loud even when cpu load is low again?

If not this could just be some kinds of "dust prevention"

Yeah, it stays loud until I change the battery settings.

Not sure if this will help, but there is a project to improve the Linux experience on ROG Laptops: https://asus-linux.org/

Also remember to check this: https://universal-blue.org/images/asus/

Those images should work easily out of the box and give you a very gentle experience in general :)

Besides the uBlue-image I recommended in the other comment (Link here), which should give you a great OOTB-experience and which you should try first if you want, maybe check out fancontrol.

Sadly, fancontrol is a bit more complicated and might make your device overheat if you reduce the cooling fan speed.
