I do not like [other genre] + [comedy] that much, but [comedy] + [other genre] can be a lot of fun. It's the difference between a zombie movie with a few funny moments shoved in and Shaun of the Dead.

Characters make weird decisions , responds to the situation in stupid ways , makes plot holes as in that’s so stupid no one would do that it’s only there to advance plot

Comedy is not just cheap one liners and many great movies are a mix of comedy and tragedy or comedy and action or comedy and drama.

Comedy can give you a much needed break between heavy moments. Sometimes when media is just pure bleak, it can be hard to feel like there's a point to the hero's victory if everything is going to suck, anyway. Characters having fun makes it seem like they have something to look forward to.

That being said, I hate it when movies and shows in particular get carried away and can't let a serious moment play out without slipping in a quip. The emotional scenes need room to breathe, too.

The Evil Dead movies, for example, were popular because of how they integrated Three Stooges-style slapstick humor with horror. If they had been straight horror, they would have been just some other B-movies.

On the more serious end of comedy/horror is Get Out, which is very clever in that its funny moments are also some of its most unsettling.

Depends on the execution. See Parasite as an example. It's got a ton of genres including comedy mixed in there, but it's a phenomenal film.

Do yourself a favor and watch 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.' It was written by the author of 'The Princess Bride' and manages to be tragic and hilarious, often at the same time.

I understand where you're coming from on this. I love it when genres are mixed successfully, but the key there is "successfully". Everything needs to be consistent with the situation and the characters for it to work. It's realistic for people to be funny, tragic, romantic, and angry in sequence. Sometimes even all at the same time. But there have to be motivations for all of it that make sense in context.

Most humor in action movies is completely inappropriate. It destroys the suspension of disbelief. That is the result of bad writing and, sometimes, bad acting. It can also be done well.

If you think about it in terms of ancient Greek plays, where everything is either a comedy or tragedy, then any genre can be either comedic or tragic. The setting plays more of a role in the genre than it being amusing or dramatic.

Most movies I can even think of that are straight comedies with no other genres are typically "stoner films" like Grandma's Boy and those tend to have even more nonsensical plots than the examples given above.

Just keep in mind that comedy is meant to entertain and delight; not necessarily tell a coherent story and almost never is intended to make sense. Absurdity itself is often funny because of the disconnect between what one expects and what actually happens or is said.

Bad comedy or badly mixed, sure. There's mood, tension, pacing etc. to consider, and the odd funny or more lighthearted moment can help, not hurt, if it's done right.

Mixing comedy with other genres is easy to do badly. But there are rare examples where it's done well, and we should treasure them.

I like comedy, specially mixed into other genres. That said, I think that I get what you're saying: comedy being added as an afterthought, as relief to something that would be otherwise serious. For example, an otherwise competent character acting idiotically OOC just to deliver a pun; I don't like this either, if you're going to add comedy then integrate it properly into the rest of the work.

Your description just sounds like bad quality comedies. It is entirely possible to make great comedies mixed with other genres, and it has been done succesfully a lot.
