Shame no KVM built in for those of us with work and home computers. That seems often overlooked on many displays.
That aside seems like a solid alternative on paper.
A lot of the Dell and Eizo monitors for office use seem to have these. Unfortunately no 5k monitors
Yeah love my Dell monitors, I've had 3 UltraSharps and currently have a UP3017 and it's great.
I really want something that is ~200PPI and has an IPS Black panel as my next monitor and it needs to have a built in KVM and adjustable stand. (120hz would be nice too, but idk how possible that is at such a resolution). So I'll just keep using this monitor until something finally comes along, it's crazy how long it's taken for "retina" monitors to become widespread.
I’m stoked that they’re making this! Please buy it! There isn’t anything else in the same class as the Studio Display (5k/27”) to my knowledge which was why Apple had to make the Studio Display, but also why they can charge so much for it! It’s nice that it works with Windows for people who use both macOS and Windows, but I’m guessing exactly 0 people buy this exclusively for their XPS/HP laptops.
I think the introductory pricing will come down within a few months. I stated in another comment, but maybe ~$1000 by holiday/ Black Friday season? This looks like a good product, but it’s hard to imagine why someone would spend the same amount for a similar product that isn’t first party (Apple), even if this has some nice included features (matte display and adjustable stand) that Apple charges for. I think long term, the best marketing for this product is “it’s like the Apple display, but costs way less.”
Yeah buying one of these without a considerable savings over the Apple alternative would be madness. I sold a Thunderbolt Display for like $350 about 10 years after I bought it and at that point it had been discontinued for something like 5 years. Seemed crazy to me but that's what they were all going for on Craigslist, so whatever. It sold quickly too.
Good luck selling a Samsung monitor for anywhere near that much 10 years after you bought it. So yeah, I think if they can get it down to about $1000 that'd be the price point.
Oh yeah I mean their stuff has absolutely no resale value. Like I said, I think the introductory price is just to see if anyone nibbles, catch those “early adopters” such as it is, who for whatever reason didn’t buy the Studio Display, maybe cause they thought it would be market making and inspire competition.

Yay user testing! Actually the period was from autocorrect. But should specifying a specific date time, like I did, work? Seems like it wants relative time duration instead.

Just 60 Hz. Is there a technical limitation that prevents 5K@120 Hz?
Isn’t it a bandwidth issue? If not that, then probably it’s just too expensive to produce for a prosumer-grade product. I think there’s a market for this product, as there’s presumably a market for the Studio Display that they’re trying to compete with, but I would guess that this quickly drops to ~$1000 if they actually want to move these. Making this with a 5k/120fps display would certainly push their price above Apples and I just kinda doubt there’s enough of a market. Pricing it equal to the Studio display seems like they’re just testing the waters but no way can be a long term thing.
Since 8k60 exists, I'm sure at least 90hz would be doable with today's standards
As far as data, ok. Haven’t ever looked for an 8k display. Nothing in the Apple world seems to do 90hz though, it’s 60 or 120. I wonder if MacBook Pro support display outputting those high res/high refresh rates also.
Currently 8k requires two displayport cables or thunderbolt with DSC (compression), which is not optimal
Hdmi 2.1 can do 8k60
DisplayPort 2.0 can 5k/120 with DSC and UHBR 10 cables, or 5k/120 without DSC on UHBR 13.5 cables. HDMI 2.1 can handle 5k/120 with DSC in use.
It's not a bandwidth limitation.
But is there enough bandwidth to spare such that you can still send data back the other way? Pretty much all displays function as a USB hub as well.
Yes. Thunderbolt 5 supports DP 2.1, with up to 80 Gbit/s of bandwidth. A 5k/120 with 10 bit color and no DSC display needs 57 Gbit/s of bandwidth.
